Cleveland woman sentenced for dragging kids back into burning house

CLEVELAND (AP) — A judge rejected a prosecutor's request for more than 50 years in prison for a woman who admitted that she set her home on fire and then dragged her two daughters back inside after they ran for help.
Laquana O'Neal, of Cleveland, was sentenced to eight years in prison by Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Jose Villanueva on Wednesday.
The prosecutor's request for the maximum sentence was inappropriate given that O'Neal had no prior criminal record and functions normally when medicated for her paranoid schizophrenia, the judge said.
O'Neal pleaded guilty Aug. 15 to charges of aggravated arson, felonious assault and child endangering. She apologized in court Wednesday and told the judge that she “had lost my mind” when she set the fire Feb. 5, 2005.
A court psychiatrist determined O'Neal knew right from wrong at the time of the crime and found she was competent for trial, leading to the plea.
O'Neal's daughters, then ages 8 and 12, rushed to tell their mother they smelled smoke and then ran to a neighbor's. O'Neal dragged them back inside the home and poked them with burning incense sticks while interrogating them about sex, Assistant County Prosecutor Ronni Ducoff said.
A neighbor saw smoke and pulled O'Neal and the girls out of the home. All three were treated for smoke inhalation.
