I have been wanting to read Bel Canto for ages. A couple people told me that it's excellent.

Re: has anyone read either

I read Reading Lolita in Tehran, and I liked it very much. It is non-fiction and written by a woman who was a literature professor, until she was fired by the university for refusing to wear the chador in public. She starts a reading group for some of her female students in her home. I liked it so much for the insider's view of life in Iran, post-Shah, and I loved reading about the lives of the students and how they struggle with wanting control of their lives in a male dominated culture that often times does not value them.

The author also talks about life in Iran before the Ayatollahs took over and how the country went through (and continues to experience) a cultural revolution. the creative people, the writers and artists, must be very careful about what they are putting out there and what they criticize. It made me appreciate the freedoms we have here a great deal.

Re: has anyone read either

Reading lolita is great.

I would not waste my time with Bel Canto. It makes my list of one of the worst books I have ever read. I only finished it because it was an easy read and I hate not finishing books, but I came close.

I love to read, but I find it helps me to have some input other than what is on the book jacket before I invest my time in the book.
