Fetal Echocardiogram

Has anyone ever had this done? The doctor that did my ultrascreen is recommending it because of family history (DH's cousin passed from a heart defect). I am going to do some research on my own, but I just wondered what it entailed, how invasive, etc. TIA!

Also forgot to say my SIL (DH's sister)had a 3-D sonogram of the heart for my neice not a fetal EKG...I am so confused!

Re: Fetal Echocardiogram

I had it done at 28 weeks after the doctor got an irregular heartbeat with the doppler during a normal visit.

It was basically like a sonogram, but they did a more extensive survey of the heart and structures around it. They looked at all the valves, flow of blood, etc.... They monitored his heartbeat for 45 min to see if there was anymore irregularity.

Everything was normal in the end. HTH.... Good Luck!

Thank you! Like I said, I am going to ask my reg. ob/gyn's opinion also. I just wanted to make sure it was invasive or anything.

I had one done w/this pregnancy. It is no more invasive than a regular ultrasound. The biggest difference is that they spend the entire time looking at the structure of the baby's heart, valves and major arteries, blood flow, etc. Actually, the blood flow portion is kinda neat to see...b/c they view it in color, so you can see blue and red on the screen, indicating the oxygenated blood and carbon dioxide filled blood.

HTH...and I hope everything checks out just fine w/your baby!Chat Icon
