Moms who pump and breastfeed
When do you pump? I want to start doing it so DH can feed him too but I don't want to ruin my supply when I breastfeed. How am I supposed to do this to get it right?

I have a hard time with this also. I normally pump in the middle of the night but hopefully you can find a better time to do it. But today for example I had to pump this am for some extra and sidney has been tugging at my boobs ever since. She's getting all she needs but it is just taking her a little longer than usual.
But, once you pick a time stick with it. Your body will become accustomed to it and will make more supply for that time.

When I went to see the LC, she said to choose a time between two feedings, and as the PP said, stick with that time. So, if you feed the baby every three hours, pump in between at one and a half hours. Also, when your husband feeds the baby with the bottle, pump at that time as well.

I think that if you do that it's possible that at first you won't have as much when you nurse, but very quickly I think the body will just start producing more milk, because it's completely supply and demand. I'd say start with 1-2 times a day pumping and then work your way up.

I'm pumping twice a day... once about an hour after her first morning feed, and I can get about 4-5 ounces and once in the evening about an hour after she feeds, and I can only get about 2-3 ounces that time

Are you pumping both breasts? I did my first try this am and got 1.5 oz in 10 minutes out of 1 but I'm so afraid to do both!

It's supposed to be better if you do both - something about let-down in one causing the other to do the same. Besides, why not get as much as you can at the same time instead of spending twice as long to do one at a time.

Yup... I'm not double pumping at the same time just yet though... I'm a wimp  I'll pump one boob and then go to the other... it's weird but I can get SOOO much more out of my right side... now I know why she was having trouble with the other side in the beginning!

I was REALLY nervous about this, but everything I read said to introduce the bottle at 3-4 weeks or else she might have trouble accepting the bottle if we wait too long... Gadi fed her from the bottle last night and she breastfed 3 hours later NO problem... this morning he bottlefed her again and the rest of the day she's been breastfeeding no problem. She did get a little fussy when Gadi bottlefed her, I think because she likes the skin contact of breastfeeding... I guess that will go away as we practice more

Could Gadi try feeding her with skin-to-skin contact? I'm not sure actually who Gadi is but maybe this is a possibility?
I also pump only one breast at a time even though I have a double pump. I don't know how the heck I'm supposed to turn the thing on or adjust it while I'm pumping if I was pumping both because I'd have to hold both!!
I get anywhere between 3-5 oz in the AM and then as the day goes on it dwindles, usually max is 3 oz as the day goes on, anywhere between 2-3 for my last pump of the day. And we're not really breastfeeding so I'm hoping this is a good amount to be getting. I'm worried of my milk drying up.

I was getting exactly what you wer and now i barely get 2...i usually pump every 2 hrs... but the past 2 days my schedule has been way off...am i gonna be able to build this back up?

I just hold the right pump in the crook of my right elbow and reach over and hold the left pump with right hand - if that descrition helps. That way i can use my left hand to adjust. Not too hard. Or now I know exactly where to turn the nob when I turn it on and when i start to see milk I press the button with my toe.

I pump about an hour after I feed Julia in the morning - I can get about 5-7 oz at that time (both breasts of course)

I really never had any problem ruining my supply with pumping. I would feed my daughter first thing in the morning, then pump when she was done eating. Two hours later if she was hungry I would nurse her, otherwise I would pump. Within a couple of days I had enough milk in the fridge for bottles. Then, in the middle of the night, if DH got up to give her a bottle, i would also get up and pump. Before I went out somewhere I would always pump. At work, I would pump twice....i wound up with tons of milk and plenty to nurse her with.

I pumped for a year. It was the only thing that kept my supply up. Pumping does not hurt your supply unless you do it and don't have any for your nursing times. The morning, after you nurse, is one of the best times to pump. Your body makes the most milk at that time. Also, the middle of the night is great- but not easy on new moms.
You really need a good pump at this point though. A pump in style/advance. The hand pump is a long process and it inconsistent. that could hurt your supply actually.
If you plan on pumping at work you should have a high quality, double electric pump like the one above. Those other pumps are meant for moms who SAH and just pump once in a while to leave a bottle for a sitter.
I also had a hands free bra that was the best $30 I ever spent. it is called Easy Expressions. I got it new on ebay. No more holding the pumping parts to your breasts and you have 2 free hands!

I fed one side, pumped the other side out and than switched to increase my supply. At one point toward the end I was getting 9 oz out of each side! I think my boobs thought I had quads.
I never could do the double pumping thing - felt to bovine like. Plus I was pumping at my office so I would keep one hand free to do work.

Thanks ladies - I am also so afraid because everything I read says make sure you only feed your baby STERILE breastmilk - I've sterilized the pump and containers - but I'm so afraid of doing something wrong!
