Same Names in Families

My husband and I like the name Justin and would like to name our baby Justin if it is a boy. DH has a cousin named justin. Is it wrong or weird to have 2 Justin's in the same family?

The last name is different and they would be second cousins.

Opinions?

No, I don't think it would be a problem. Maybe that cousin would be Honored to share the same name.

In my family - we have like 7 Richards and 6 Anne's....so go figure! We all don't mind sharing names....

Re: Same Names in Families

We will be doing the same thing, if we have a girl - we will name her Alison. DH 1st cousin has a daughter named Alison. They will have the same last name - it happens - so that is why we are sticking with the name we love

My daughter is Katherine and my cousin's daughter, who is 4, is also Katherine. My SIL's name is Catherine.

I guess I felt a bit funny about the name being the same as my cousin's daughter, but hey, I liked the name and anyhow, we only see them 3-4 times a year. As for my SIL, she is only known by Cathy, and my daughter will never be known by that nickname.

I feel a little better now! For some reason I thought it wasn't right. My mom told me it doesn't matter because she has a lot of Johns's and Joe's in her family, but I still wanted to get the opinions of others!

Re: Same Names in Families

That far removed I wouldn't care, especially if you rarely see the other person.

I would not name my child the same name as a neice/nephew. My cousins (who are siblings) did this..it was so dumb. They both wanted Michael and were due 1 week apart. They got mad at each other and decided they would do it anyway..so they both had sons 10 days apart named the same name.

Re: Same Names in Families

Every woman on my mother's side of the family has either Rose, Mary or Elizabeth as part of her name.
My Great Grandmother was Elizabeth...and all 7 of her daughters had Mary in some part of their name...Rosemary, Mary Ellen, Mary Loretta, Margret Mary, Anna Marie...(which is a form of Mary), Francis Mary...and My Grandmother was Mary Katherine....my Grandmother was the only one actually called Mary...her sisters used their middle names.
My Mom is Rosemary Elizabeth
My Aunt is Elizabeth Rosemary
My Cousin is Jennifer Elizabeth
My Sister is Meladie Mary
I'm Dannielle Elizabeth

DH has 2 first cousins named Christopher. So I don't think naming your son the same as DH's cousin woudl be a problem.

Also, I love the name Justin!!! My fav name for a boy but DH knew a kid growing up named that and was against naming our son that.

Both of my BILs are Joseph, my son is Joseph. I would think it was strange if your husband's brother or sister had a Justin and you named your child Justin.

Beore we named Joseph, we asked my BIL (twin's husband) if he had a son, would he name him Joseph so we wouldn't have the same name. He said absolutely not. Fast forward a year after Joseph was born, my sister said they've rethought it & now want to name her son-to-be Joseph. No one has a trademark on naming a child, but I was furious. In the end, they went with another name.

Re: Same Names in Families

I have 3 nephews named Jack so I dont think its that weird. But its a family name. If you were talking about your son having the same name as HIS cousin and its not a family name, I would think your siblings or your DHs siblings might find it strange or annoying that you want to use the name. But I think your DH's cousin is far enough removed that it wouldnt matter. My son is Luke and when we named him, I forgot my oldest cousins son is Luke. I hadnt seen either of them in yrs and his Luke is 25 now anyway.

Re: Same Names in Families

I thought about it this way: If my cousin wanted to name their child my name, how would I feel? I would LOVE it.

You might think about asking him how he feels, but then you would have to deal with the idea that he would not be OK with it.
