Bay Window
For those of you with a bay window...what do you have on the bottom shelf part?
We just had a bay window installed this week...there was never one there before. On the bottom shelf part is an unfinished wood...and we are trying to figure out what to do (The top and the sides we are going to do white to match the trim). Should we just use a clear varnish on it and leave the wood natural? Should we paint it white to match the trim? Should we put carpet on it?
Here's a pic so you can get an idea....

Your window is beautiful!!
Ours is white on the bottom shelf- to match the trim and the top. I think either wood or white would look really nice- I'm not partial to carpet though....
Hey- what are you doing for window treatments for the window- It's the last undecorated part of our living room- I'm thinking of finding a "scarf" to drape?

My only reason for not wanting to pain the bottom part white is because of the cat and the dog. The cat will sit in the window...but the dog will eventually find a way up there (probably jump from the furniture because he will see the cat in there  ), but I'm afraid the dog will scratch the paint on the bottom which is why I'm thinking the wood will be better.
As for window treatments...I have no idea. That is my last and biggest obstacle....since we are remodeling the entire house, I have all new windows and no clue as to what to do with any of them!

Ours is white to match the trim. I dont think that I would do carpet.

Ours is varnished wood, but the top and sides are as well.
I have sheers on tension rods in the windows themselves, and then roll up shades mounted on the wall over the window. My MIL had vertical blinds up.

Have you thought about a cushion and making it a window seat? As for treatments, I guess it depends on what look you were going for for the rest of the house. The honeycomb blinds are great, they filter light in but keep the privacy. Also, the rollup bamboo binds are nice and would look great in that window.

We have ours as just the wood and I have a dark green lace scarf on it. We have a scarf for a window treatment.

We bought a wood stain and my DH stained the wood. It looks really good, I will try to take a pic tomorrow.
ETS: We have a bow, not a bay though. For a window treatment, we got a custom veritcal blind that spans the whole window.

No suggestions but I love Bay windows! Just curious how much does it cost to put a bay window in? I would love to put one in my family room overlooking my driveway.
This way I can see who's out there.

We did not have a bay window there before...so it cost more that it would have to just replace it. They had to create the roof line that goes on top of the window and the installation cost almost as much as the window. The total including installation was about $2300.

Ours in stained wood to match the wood on the window and molding. I am probably going to put a fabric runner there to prevent scratches. I have only seen them rectangular shaped so I think I might try to make on myself
