Spay recovery question
Bella got spayed on Monday morning, and came home on Tuesday. The vet said no climbing stairs for a few days. Anyway, we live on the 3rd floor with no elevator. When I brought her home she climbed up the stairs fine, just slow. Later that day when she had to go out she went down the first half a flight of stairs stopped at the landing and then ran back to the apt. refusing to go down. So since Tuesday I have been carrying my 50+ pound dog down the stairs. She will walk up no problem, I am worried though because now she is scared to go near the stair to go down, how long will her recovery take? She is back to her old self with everything else (playing, jumping etc) I don't know how much longer I can carry her, its killing my back.

Re: Spay recovery question
Is it possible that the steps are rubbing against where the stitches are? If so then she will probably not want to do stairs until the stitches are removed.
I'd call the vet & see if maybe this is not an indication of a healing issue as well. It is possible that the area might feel tight or pulled when climbing stairs. Remember that the internal catgut stitches are far more extensive for a female than the external, so even if the outside looks like it is healing, the internal may still be in the beginning stages & can be uncomfortable.
Good luck & let us know what your vet says.

Re: Spay recovery question
the stairs aren't hitting her, and they are very wide, and not steep at all, I call the vet and they give her a few more days. I am just worried she will develop a fear of the stairs.

I absolutely understand. The reason I asked is b/c if the stairs are not rubbing or hitting the stitches, then you may want to coax her down the stairs with a treat or a toy to break this behaviour before it becomes a habit.
Just like any other training, positive reinforcement is best. Carry a small amount of treats with you. Once she starts using the stairs again on her own, mix it up by giving her treats some times & praise other times, then phase out the treats eventually.
