Anyone not do a "themed" nursery?

at this point....I don't think we're going to get our $190 bedding set (which I am fine with...I have more than enough family that can make a quilt and such). We sure as anything can't afford it ourselves-I'd rather have my pack n play or my swing.

But I'm thinking of just painting the room and not sticking to one particular thing. SIL and her friend can do a mural (I was thinking a tree with a swing and some flowers and butterflies...very garden like)

Has anyone just painted the room a solid color with no chair rail/wainscotting/ two tone, etc?

We just really need to stick to a budget and doing an all out nursery is not in the cards for us and we need to think about getting it done sooner than later!

Our room for walls and bedding cost us $20 bucks for paint $20 for border and $60 for bedding. There are some inexpensive patterns. Then we spent like 20 bucks on shelving at Lowes and $18 on letters and someone bought us our lamp.
Jack will move to our guest room when he is older so we didn't want to spend alot on a theme that wouldn't be used for longer then 2 years and we also wanted to be able to use the same for baby #2 if we are so lucky to get pregnant again.

It's possible to have an all out nursery on a budget. I'm happy with ours.. Yours will be great too!

I loved the Arcadia pattern as well as the ones BRU has with planes since Dh is a pilot but I just couldn't spend more on baby bedding then our bedding

Shana I have to say my Mom got an adorable set of baby Sesame Street for her 'nursery' for my little one at her house and it was under $50 at K-mart. It's so cute too!

You can buy a few pieces and then do solid colored curtains, sheets, etc that you can get cheaper elsewhere. You don't need the quilt, they can't sleep with it anyway. I'd get the skirt and the bumper, and then find other pieces that coordinate elsewhere.

I am completely for just doing a nursery without a theme. I am almost kicking myself now that we picked bedding with such a "theme" because I was at BRU tonight and there are so many cute things out there, it makes me just wish that I could have all of it!

But seriously, you have so many options. You can get plain crib sheets, and they have plain bumpers over by the crib sheets also. If you have someone who can quilt something for the crib, or even a beautiful wall hanging since baby doesn't really use blankets until it's much older anyway for safety reasons, and if you have people who can paint you a mural, I think it's just so much more unique and heartfelt then buying a boxed expensive "theme" kit from a store.

I am all about not having exactly what everyone else has, except for important things like pack n plays and strollers and things like you said. When itcomes to things like bedding and nursery where you can show your personality more, or have it be things that were handmade especially for baby, I think it just means so much more.

Also what about ebay? Maybe you could find an inexpensive bedding set that you like on ebay.

You can also try Overstock.com - they have some cute nursery bedding for REALLY cheap!

Laurie...thanks so much for sharing how much you spent.

Consignment shops down here are really popular, so I might be able to get my hands on a nice set for cheap OR go for the handmade thing.

I really like the whole "garden/outdoorsy" thing since her crib is the white spindle kind.

If you do want to do a mural, you can check out google images and type in childrens murals. You can get a lot of ideas. I have pictures of some if you want to FM me your e mail I will send to you. There are also lots of cheap crafty things you can do like a paper bag wall or some faux painting.

Just for the record you don't need a quilt. The baby doesn't use it. Some people hang it on the wall. But in general it is a waste. If you can buy a set individually just get what you need.
