Lolita... really really long

Hi, I've been reading through the pet posts and noticed you are passionate about animals. I was wondering if you can give me some advice.

My brother, sister, and father always wanted a dog. After years of battling my mother caved and they bought a puppy from a pet store. After getting rocky, I started reading about dogs and have become anti pet store. My next dog will be from a shelter or a responsible breeder.

When we bought Rocky, a lot of money too, they claimed and swore he was a cockapoo and that he was not sick, came from a good breeder, etc.. My dog thankfully was never really severely sick but he had some health problems for the couple of months and ended up being a YORKIEPOO, not cockapoo. Though I don't care what he is, I am mad that the pet store did not know what they were selling.

Should I report them? Yes, No, and how?

well first off, what pet shop is it? is it on LI?

Yuppy Puppy & Puppy Depot are the absolute worst. they have garbage bags full of dead pups every week.

(not to mention Canine Corral, Shake-a-Paw, Pet Company, BTJ's Jungle, ETC)

either way you can DEF do something about it.
whether it be reporting them to better business bureau or whathaveyou.

i would have to look into it for you, on how to report them.

unfortunatly, this is VERY common. they make stuff up all the time. they use the words "teacup", "deisgner breed", etc. they ALL come from backyard breeders or Puppymills---depends on the actual shop.
they told me that the minpins they had were fully grown when in fact they would grow to be at least triple the size they were.
they are either A)lieing or B)uneducated about what they are selling.
once i went into one and asked to see some chihuahuas and they said "we dont have any, buy we have this dog that is SORTA like a chihuahua" W.T.F?!?!? it was a maltese i think.

its really sad and i am so happy you now know that pet shops are bad and choose to get your next pup elsewhere.

im happy to hear your dog is healthy though, thats good.

if you would like to report them i would DEFINATLY suggest it.
i know its "buyer beware" but they shouldnt get away with anything more than they already do. every report helps!!!!!

you wont get anything out of it really, but at least hopefully someone will see your report and will not give them business and for every ONE person that wont give them business really helps.

Not that this post has anything to do with me but I have a story to share...

DH and I decided we wanted a puppy. And since we really didn't do our research we went to Puppy Depot in I think Coram. Anyway long story made short they told us we were purchasing a full bred Pomeranian who was up to date on all vacinations and was 100% healthy. We fell in love with Peanut so we bought her. We get her home she takes a poop and I see blood. I couldn't do anything right then and there because they were closed. So I called the next morning and they told me it was nothing to worry about it was probably just stress related from the new environment. Well, when we bought her they told us we had to get her vet checked within 48 hours otherwise should something happen to her they wouldn't cover us. Of course they had their "hook up" with a vet and we had to bring her there and only there. So I took her that Monday and explained the bleeding hadn't stopped in her poop (even brought a sample!). They tested the sample for a "puppy parasite" and told me it came back negative. They told me she was probably just stressed out but just in case keep an eye on it. (AND I had to pay for the exam out of pocket, apprently that wasn't covered by the pet store even though I had a voucher stating it was). Well after 3 more days it hadn't stopped. So, I brought her to my own vet and sure enough they took the stool sample and it came back that she had a parasite. It was easily corrected with antibiotics. But at that time I was also notified of a birth defect in her left back leg which causes her to have a "slipping patella". Basically, her knee caps pops in and out. My vet told me it was nothing to be too concerned about right now because she is still young, but, may need surgery in the future. As if that isn't bad enough she has alergies and requires vitamin supplements to provide more calcium to prevent deteriation of the cartilige in her knee.

Of course DH and I love her to death and wouldn't give her up for the world. But I was truly devastated when I learned all of her "problems" after we had invested so much money and the vet I was told to go to didn't say a word.

So, thats my vent! I would never ever purchase another dog from a pet store. We have definitely learned our lesson! Only trusted breeders for us here on out.

its really sad. yeah they all have their vet hook ups. i think its really bad that a vet would do that. those vets should be ashamed.
and thank god you brought her to your own vet becuase the problem could have gotten alot worse.

glad Peanut is ok now.

what do you mean bags full of puppies

that is so sad...i always wondered , how do they "sell" all those puppies so quickly...i wonder what really happens?

not that they kill the pups, but because they dont make it. they are most of the time poorly bred (puppymill pups are alot worse off than backyard bred dogs most of teh time)
and they die.

not to mention they arent given proper vet care.

its really really sad, but there's nothing you can really do.

i know it sounds messed up, but at least they die before some family buys them and then gets screwed because their puppy dies like two weeks later.... you know those places wont reembust you. they'd probably blame you!

Tink came from a backyard breeder and the breeder was telling me how some owners she sold a pup to died because they gave him shots too early. i bet it was her bad breeding though


eta: i dont THINK they put the pups down, i think they die on their own... i cant see the business wanting to lose profit....... but now that i think about it you never know i guess. i never thought about that til now.

Unfortunately, a lot of "puppymill bred" dogs are in bred. So the mother and father of a puppy could actually be brother/sister. This causes severe genetic birth defects which is also part of the cause they "die in bagfuls".

NO...Lolita is right about that. I have known a few people who worked in pet shops(not for very long) that sold pups.
They don't put them to sleep unless they get really big (like a mastiff at six month's old) and they know they won't sell it.
A lot of the puppies die from illness, either in transit to the store or once they get to the store. Apparently, these pet stores have garbage bags full of puppies that they just throw away.
Puppymill breeders do NOT want the puppies back, no matter what. Besides, think of the expense of sending a dog back to Ohio somewhere. Especially after the store has been feeding the pup since they got it. They are not going to make any additional investments in a dog they won't sell.
This is why people ask that you don't buy from a pet store. But, on the other hand, I always feel that if someone doesn't buy the puppies, then they are all doomed. I really don't know what the true solution is, because apparently what the pet stores do is legal.
