Anyone else at Lido beach today? SHARKS in the water!!!
My friend and I were at the beach (lido west) today and we were there 5 mins when the lifeguards frantically called everyone out of the ocean! Turns out a few people had seen sharks (6-8 foot sand sharks) close to shore right where we were. We stayed another hour and couldn't stand the heat... still weren't allowed in. There were helicopters hovering and boats in the water looking for them I guess... crazy!

Yeah the lifeguards stayed late bc of sharks in LB this weekend. Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't there only like dogfish on Long Island or sand sharks...hardly the great white out for a human sandwich.

Yeah, small sharks are not the maneaters, but when you are faced with one it's too scary!

I have caught Brown shark and off of the coast of LI. We actually saw a GW about 100 miles south of LI on one of our trips.

I was at Point Lookout a few weeks ago and a dead baby shark was washed up on the sand

As far as I know they have teeth. I wouldn't be too wooried about sand sharks. They may inflict some damage, but as far as I know there has never been a fatality from one.

When we go fishing we catch sand sharks sometimes...I can't remember if they have teeth (I think they do), but scary anyway!!!

Most sharks do have teeth. 2 of the somewhat exceptions are the whale shark (the largest fish in the water), and basking sharks (the second largest). Both of these sharks feed similar to whales in that they filter feed. The last 2 summers we have had basking sharks in Long Island waters. Last year they were seen out in East Hampton and off Jones Beach.

I wouldn't worry too much about being attacked by a shark here in NY. Here are the stats from the International Shark Attack File:
US shark attacks
There have only been 6 attacks in NY waters, with none of them being fatal.

They do have teeth and can do some damage to a human, but they're not really known to attck humans.

They showed footage on the 10pm news on Fox last night-
They confirmed it was a school of STING RAYS- NOT SHARKS!!! When they were flapping their "wings", it looked like shark fins to most. They showed video, and from above, it was definitely sting rays.
NO WORRIES!!!
