renting an illegal apt...need real estate agents help

me and dh r in the process of looking for a bigger place. an agent that we're with sent us to an illegal apt...we had to walk through there stuff to get to our door. our entrance was in the backyard. can the agent be fined for taking that house as a client. if the landlord is caught, what can happen to the people that r renting the apt.

any help will be greatly appreciated

I am not a RE Agent, but I have a friend who is. I have heard that the tenant can be evicted but the landlord can be forced to give the tenants back all of their rent ever paid. Chat Icon

In Nassau county the county will collect back taxes on the rent... as if they paid property taxes on the apt. because illegal apts. cost the county revenue that otherwise that that landlord would have to pay in increased proerty taxes. It can be in the thousands and thousands of dollars.
