Turkey Tossing Teen Gets Six Months In Jail
A Long Island Teenager Admits Throwing A Turkey From A Moving Car And Critically Injuring Another Driver
NEW YORK A teenager admitted Monday that he threw a 20-pound turkey through the windshield of a passing car, critically injuring a 44-year-old woman driving that vehicle. Monday she forgave the teenager, even embracing him in a tearful hug.
Ryan Cushing, 18, of Huntington, pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree assault in a tearful appearance before Suffolk County Court Judge Barbara Kahn. As part of the plea deal with prosecutors, Cushing will serve six months in jail and five years probation when he is sentenced on Oct. 17, said a spokesman for District Attorney Thomas Spota.
If convicted of first-degree assault at trial, Cushing could have been sentenced to a maximum of 25 years.
Cushing was one of a group of teenagers traveling in two vehicles in Lake Ronkonkoma on Nov. 13, 2004. He said in court Monday that he flung the 20-pound fresh turkey out the rear window of the car in which he was a passenger. The bird, which had just been bought at a nearby supermarket, smashed through the windshield of a car being driven by Victoria Ruvolo of Lake Ronkonkoma.
The impact bent her steering wheel inward and shattered every bone in her face. She spent more than a month in the hospital, receiving extensive facial reconstructive surgery, said Bob Clifford, a spokesman for Spota. She continues to receive physical therapy.
Ruvolo, an office manager, approved of the plea deal involving Cushing and the two hugged in a tearful embrace in the courtroom during Monday's proceeding, Clifford said.
Kahn warned Cushing that if he is ever caught violating probation, he will be re-sentenced to 21/2-7 years in prison.
Five other teenagers involved in the incident have previously pleaded guilty to various charges, including credit card theft for a spending spree that included video games, movies, as well as the turkey.

I dont think I wouldve hugged him, thats for sure! Forgive him, maybe, sue him...probably, Definitley! He put her through a lot!

yea I heard this today on 1010 wins- kinda strange the whole hug thing and she said to him I love you- and I want you to live a good life. Now that is a bit extreme but what ever floats your boat!

wow.....forgiveness is an amazing thing. Not sure if I would do the same, however, you have to admire the strength and grace of the victim who forgave the kid....

wow.....forgiveness is an amazing thing. Not sure if I would do the same, however, you have to admire the strength and grace of the victim who forgave the kid....
I do admire that she was able to forgive him. I highly doubt I would have! I HOPE this stupid kid learned his lesson when this gracious woman put her arms around him and cried with him
