Acid reflux???

Does anybody suffer from this? I thought I had just allergies but my doc said it sounds more like reflux. I am CONSTANTLY clearing my throat, there is a lot of stuff trying to find it's way up my throat. (sorry if TMI).

Anyways, any tips from those who have been there? I started my meds but I am sooo uncomfortable with this right now.Chat Icon

Re: Acid reflux???

I have it, I used to take meds but they made me lethargic, so I don't rake anything now. I really do need to take something though because I can feel the burn in my throat sometimes.

Re: Acid reflux???

I dont suffer from it, My FH does and a severe case almost everytime.
OTC like pepcid help and another at home that works for him is tsp baking soda in a glass 1/2 full.
I know it sounds gross but it alleviates the feeling.
He is living off Nexium.

Re: Acid reflux???

Me! My family has a hsitory of acid reflux and gerd.
Controlling your diet is the best thing you can do.
Cut out caffeine, chocolate, acidic foods (tomatoes [including red sauce on pizza and marinara], lemons, grapefruites ect)
Say goodbye to soda, coffee, chocolate and mint. Use a food journal for a bit to learn your specific trigger foods and then cut them out as well.

It's hard at first, but honestly for me now, it's VERY easy! The htought of suffering all night greatly outweighs the need to eat chocolate of have a can of coke.

That is very true. I am honestly about to give up eating altogether at this point; I am so miserable. And, that is a lot for me cause I love my food.Chat Icon

Re: Acid reflux???

I have severe acid reflux, to the point where I get burning and chest pains that mimic heart problems (the first time I had the pain so bad I was SURE I was having a heart attack Chat Icon)

Unfortunately, its a total change in diet that will help keep the reflux under control. I don't really get a lot of burning in my throat BUT when the condition reaches its peak, it happens to me as well

I also take Nexium, its the only thing that works to keep the reflux/GERD at bay. The last time I had an extreme flare up, I took the Nexium for 1 month and it seemed to help for a while. This go-around, I have been on the meds for over a month and even ON the meds I am getting flare ups (I went off the diet at holiday time and BOY did I pay for it Chat Icon)

I pretty much have to remain on the meds for a while now, since I probably aggravated the condition so much that its now taking a LOT longer to 'Heal"

Its HORRIBLE, I know (and I hate having to give up so many things I love.. esp. tomato sauce.. I cannot even take a bite.. so no pasta w/sauce or pizza for me.. its torture) But I think to myself how sick I will be and its keeps me on track

It will become more manageable though, so hang in there!Chat Icon

Re: Acid reflux???

I don't want to become the scary person. But my two uncles died of esophogieal cancer and the doctors (at sloan kettering) said that it was because they had gerd, barretts syndrom and acid reflux so bad that eventually the acid ate away at all the lining in thier throat.
That also helps me stay away from the bad food. I know it sounds extreme for most, but since two seperate men in my family had this, its enough to scare me straight.

Chat Icon Im sorry to hear that too...its is scary.

I sound like a nag to my FH 1/2 the time, "dont eat chocolate, dont DRINK, dont eat before bed"..it does become repetitious but u think he would listen and then he suffers at nite and cant sleep!

I read so much and I know that can occur and of course I wouldnt want that to happen. Im going to keep on nagging!!!

Re: Acid reflux???

My Mother and I both have it and it's horrible. I take Nexium on and off. I did find, when I was on a low carb diet, I had less bouts of it.

Re: Acid reflux???

I have to give up the coffee and soda, which are big triggers for me...I rarely eat pasta, but when I do, Zing....I do not like the pain or discomfort...I give up coffee for a few weeks then one day I start w/ 1 cup, and it starts all over again!!
