Painting question....

my question is this...

primer- is it supposed to come out a bit streaky?

Dh never painted before and was going to give up about 2 minutes into it when a plop of primer landed on his head

Dh is convinced there is no way we can paint bc the color is going to come out like the primer...I told him it wouldn't and that primer doesn't look like what a nice paint job would look like...is this true?

Edited to add that our walls are brand new sanded/spackled never been painted sheet rock.

you got the tinted primer right? and the walls were fixed and sanded?

The primer never looks good.. it's purpose is to cover up the bare walls so that when you get to the real painting, any spackling or sanding that you did, doesn't come through.

edited to say that you want to prime evenly (streaks are okay) and make sure there are no drip marks or it'll be noticeable when you paint with the actual color.

I KNEW I should have come over to watch him paint!!!! I would have paid $$ to see that happen!

Yes - primer will come out streaky - the color will go over it nicely though.

You can still call Dominic though if he wants to give up!

It was amusing...I've painting before and he hasn't so I let him do most of the work while I sat back and laughed....

All walls were fixed and sanded and were good to go. We asked the guy who worked in the store where we bought the paint what primer to use and he gave us a white one, our room will be painted a blue color, was that wrong?

After he was done I went over the room and fixed all drip marks so hopefully tonight we'll be good to go....its gonna be a long night!!!

I see a professional painter coming to our house in the near future.....

hmm.. Whenever we've painted, we've asked the guy at the store for a primer and then he usually asks us what color we're painting the room and they then make a tinted primer that has a bit of the final color we're going to use in it. Is it a light blue perhaps? Maybe that's why it didn't need to be tinted?

I have to say that this is the best part of owning your own home. Just think, not too long ago, you were all stressed out about the closing and now here you are now painting your new HOME! Enjoy every minute of it !! Even if it's at your DH's expense lol

The primer always looks like crap. We always do 1 coat of primer and 2 coats of paint. Just make sure you let it dry the recommened amount of time between coats. We went from a dark burgandy to a light blue and a dark burgandy to a light tan with no problems.

see that's what I was telling dh and he wasn't listening...he was convinced he was just a terrible painter...

this is exactly why we leave it to the professionals..

DH and I would kill each other.

I do plan on painting the laundry room by myself when he's not around though.
