Tell me if this would bother you....it's about my stupid neighbors and what they plan on doing to Lynbrook

A few weeks ago I recieved a flyer from a neighbor on my block letting us know that she was holding an "important neighborhood meeting" at her house which was for last night. I went and totally regret doing so.

I am from Lynbrook and I love if here, so we bought a house a few blocks from my parents so that they can watch Juliette. We moved here in January 05... The town of Lynbrook is planning on building a hotel dead center in our town, a few blocks from the high school and elementary schools. It will be placed upon a parking field where they will then build a two story facility to house all of the commuter cars. The trustee and everyone keeps talking about all the money this will bring, tourists, jobs, not raising property taxes for 2007 and so on. So they just ask for general opinions and everyone was all about the money... one man, who happens to be a republican rep who lives around the corner from me, brings up the point of all the traffic that it will add to Peninsula, Sunrise and MErrick Road... everyone cuts him off and says but we won't have our taxes raised for one year.... My point was that sticking a hotel inside this small village will bring nothing but outsiders in. ALl of the people at the meeting with the exception of the rep were over teh age of 60 and all they care about is the $$$$$$$. Their kids are grown, they will be selling in a few years and I just feel like if I wanted a hotel in the middle of my town, I would have moved near one. They kept saying that it will bring jobs-ok, but does that necessarily mean to Lynbrook residents? It will bring business class people... So business class people can't be child molesters, don't like hookers and so on? I even told them it wouldn't bother me as much if they stuck it on Sunrise HIghway, and some old bat goes, seriously, just where do you planning on putting this if it should be on SUnrise Highway???? She was a snot! EVery second word was they won't raise our property taxes next year if they biuld this... So? They will just raise them the next year and our crime rate will go up, drunk driving will go up and you will be in your little retirement home in NJ and glad you save the extra $52.20 in your pocket for the next 5 years!

I listened to them complain about my next door neighbor-who I absolutely adore-, the gardeners starting too early in the am, the ice cream man and his annoying music, how the water pressure on my cross street stinks (call the water company, why are you bringing this up here???) and yet you will welcome all the wackos in to our town.

Icing on the cake: The stupid **** that held teh meeting had the nerve to ask me how Juliette was, and then says to me, "Everytime I see you, you are carrying her. I can only imagine how spolied she must be." YOu stupid ^%&$! My daughter just turned a year on the 21st! She isn't even walking yet. Should I drag her on the ground to make you happy? I wanted to cry! All I could do is hold back my tears and say that my daughter is anything but spolied. When you work 9 hours a day and you get to see your daughter for an hour at night, believe me, all I want to do is hold her!

So at 9.30, I had my fill of dirty looks and snide comments and I left. May they all get woken up on Tuesday morning by my little Italian gardner Vinny who starts at 9am and I hope that her dog peed all over her bedroom as she had hom locked up all night!

Opinions please? You can comment on both, I am more hurt about Juliette but the town thing will affect me even longer! My neighbors ****!

i would be upset too. everyone has a right their opinion but they have no right to criticize you. sounds like you a lot of old retired grumps living in your area.

This is why it is so very important that our generation be politically active no matter how busy we are.

Those members of the older generation are just thinking short term. What do they care? They should... what about their grandchildren? What about the value of their house which is dirctly tied to the quality of the community and the public schools?

The baby boom generation and older ARE the squeeky wheel in this country because:

1. our generation doesn't vote

2. they are a greater % of the population

3. The AARP is an incredibly powerful lobbyling group. I know they meet in my school once a month and they are like a people's army.

I teach in Seaford and years ago they voted down any opportunity to have commercial real estate which would shift more of the burden off of the individual home owner. Well, they are now mad because their taxes (despite a school district on contingency... budget wasn't passed and severe cuts were made) are higher than Wantagh and Massapequa. Yeah, but I would rather pay higher taxes than have the Sunrise Mall and all of the people it brings in my backyard. Maybe if I lived in a secluded area odf town it wouldn't bother me.

I can agree with you. I wouldn't want a lot of commerical real estate in my own back yard but then... ummmm, you have to pay higher taxes. You can't have it both ways. But in the long run you are paying $50 more a year for quality of life and isn't that more important.

They are seeking a short term soluution that will affect the community in the long term. I agree with you I wouldn't want it either.

Don't let them intimidate you and keep up the good fight or they will get what they want.

It will be downtown in the middle of the village by Earle Avenue and I believe Stauderman. Right by the train whcih will make it easier for people to take jobs there.

I grew up in ER and know Lynbrook very well. Its such a shame.... I have a girlfriend who lives on Earle, just a block south of Sunrise by Trainland. I'll talk to her today, I want to hear all about this!

So its going to be in the big parking lot across from Trainland? I was born and raised in Lynbrook. They were originally planning to knock down the big bank that is across from the church on merrick road...closer to the movie theatre and making that a hotel. That was the plan a few years back.

So when do they plan to do this? Traffic on merrick and sunrise hwy in that area is already horrible. The taxes in Lynbrook and the village taxes in lynbrook are already high. Yes it would be nice to not have them go up for one year, I would have to agree with that. Dont these people realize that the property taxes will go up the next year, and probably a lot too. Also building a hotel in lynbrook is not a good thing to do. I always liked Lynbrook....since it was a quiet small Village, now it will be loud, crowded, and I am sure the crime rate will go up

They need a hotel in the middle of Lynbrook when the holiday inn is in Rockville Center?

The hampton inn is in RVC....

The Sunrise inn is considered Lynbrook

There is also the Lynbrook motel, which is a Dump and is also a really bad thing for lynbrook. I live in the area behind the motel and I cannot tell you how many bad things happened at that motel...and the bad types of people went to that motel

I was seriously thinking the same thing - they need a hotel there? In addition to all of your concern (which I think are completely valid) I can't help but wonder what would happen in year 2 when they reinstate the property tax increases again - there's no guarantee that it won't be double to recoup. That can be argued back and forth so I'll leave it alone - just thinking out loud.

I've been to so many coop board meetings that seem to resemble this nightmare that you had to endure so I just want to send a

Do you have that many tourists coming to Lynbrook? Honestly, I would be concerned about a hotel being so close to the schools. Is a big chain coming in, that they know will maintain it properly, or will it be independently run? Who is paying for the hotel? Taxpayers or the hotel owners. I bet the taxpayers will be paying for the garage, which may bring more commuters to your village from neighboring towns for the train station.

As for the annoying neighbors, if I were spiteful, I would look up the noise ordinance in the village to determine how early in the morning the landscaper can start working and I would make a standing appointment on Saturdays at that time

I am not on LI anymore, but I am still in NY. A substantial sized shopping center was built here a few years ago (Home Depot, Kohls, a few other large stores and some smaller ones). The promise was that the taxes would go down, and they have not gone down at all. There is no guarantee when all is said and done. What if they build this hotel and not enough people stay there? I'd be very anxious if I were you.

Nevermind those old biddies!! Like someone said, they are short term thinkers. If they weren't interested in opposing opinions from their own, then they shouldn't have invited you.

Thank you! I know. Juliette is only a year and she is anything but spolied! She is with my nephew who is three weeks younger over 40 hours a week and she is so passive it isn't even funny! I really hope the dog pee'd all over her bedroom.

I really don't get the reason why they think a hotel is a good idea. How many people really come to the RVC/Lynbrook area each weekend and stay at hotels? I can't imagine the Holiday Inn and Hampton Suites constantly being booked up. I don't see the demand for a hotel. That woman probably said something nasty b/c she didn't like your opinion about the hotel. What an a$$. I'm sorry you have such crappy neighbors.

I used to work promoting LI as a tourism destination, and can tell you that it won't be many tourists staying there. Tourists want to stay in the city or on the East End. The majority of our hotel rooms are filled on weekend with visiting friends and family (weddings, family reunions, etc) and during the week with people who are doing business with companies on LI.

The reason to put it in Lynbrook is that it's a quick and easy commute to the city, if you are doing business with people in the city as well as on LI. Also, there is a need for more hotel rooms in Nassau to accommodate the teams who come to compete in the Aquatic Center in Eisenhower Park. That place is filled most of the time with high school and college events. It's actually the largest pool in the country, and was rated the best back when I worked in the industry, I think now it's #2.

There will also be some tour group business (busses), which tend to be senior citizen groups. But if there isn't a restaurant on property, they are less likely to stay there. They are all about convenience and low prices. Most people visiting here can't believe that the Red Roof Inn is over $100 a night.

It will help your tax burden, but not a huge amount. And you are right, it does not mean that Lynbrook residents will get jobs there. If it's walkable from the train, I wouldn't be surprised to see people from Brooklyn and Queens reverse commuting to take some of those jobs.

I'm not saying I'd want it in my neighborhood, it will be filled most of the time since there is a need for more hotel rooms in Nassau. Just trying to shed some light on why they want to build it. Good luck getting it turned down, looks like your neighbors have bought into the tax savings.

My mom lives in Lynbrook -- she is 78 -- she doesn't want it either. She also says that they were supposed to do a bunch of work near the movie theatre and that never happened either.

My sister sings in the church right there and they are really fighting it...no need for another hotel in the area. ANd you are right, it won't bring taxes DOWN and probably wouldn't keep them wehre they are either -- but the quality of life would def. go down....
