The Union Square area is nice - it's centrally located and you can walk to lots of places, and many bus lines go through there, or are nearby.

Union Square is nice. Dh and I liked the Diva Hotel. It is in the theater area and walking distance from shopping, dining and trolley cars.
Fisherman's Wharf is very touristy, but nice to visit. You can take a trolley there and catch a boat to Alcatraz.
Def book trips to the vineyards and go to Haight Ashbury. Any questions fm me. I have been there twice.

Ths Hillton in the union square area is nice and the location is AWESOME! THe beds are really comfy and the cable cars are a block and 1/2 away from you.
