This is the description - Medium density fiberboard with laminated paper veneer finish, wood handles in pure white finish.
I don't think you can sand it - right?

i don't think you could sand it, but you could probably paint it.

You can paint just about anything. Benjamin Moore makes a product called Fresh Start that is a primer that allows you to paint over finishes w/o sanding
