 Not just the middle though, but yes mainly the middle. I think the whole 3 kids thing throws me off. How everyone has defined roles. First, middle, last. They seem to fall right into it.

I would like 2 maybe 3. DH would like 4.  If we had 3 boys, I'd probably agree to try for a girl. We spoke about wanting kinds before marriage and I knew DH wanted more than 2, but we never really discussed how many kids we wanted.

I always wanted 3 but after meeting my husband, the middle child, and knowing a few other middle children, that would definitely not be the plan any longer. If we decide to have kids we will either have 1 or 2 at the most.
The middle child scares me as well in families of 3. We are either 4 or 2. Probably wind up stopping at 2 though.
My husband and father are both middle children, and neither of them fall into the stereotypical pattern of middle children, although I do know others who do.

We've talked about it- my husband would probably love to have as many as we could, but I hust want two and he is fine with it

Two. I don't think you should put more people on earth than you already are - it's one in, one out! Actually, I've decided there will be two pregnancies absolute max - so if the second PG is a multiple birth (twins run in both our families) we could end up with three I suppose.
ETA: Yes, this is something we talked about at length before we got married.
