Lowering the crib mattress

Last week we had to lower the crib mattress because we found Jesse, who's 6 1/2 months old, on his knees with his hands on the top rail. He was thisclose to standing. We put it on the second notch, but it still looks like he can climb right over. Even the third level doesn't look low enough. How do we keep him in there?

Have you thought of a crib tent?

Re: Lowering the crib mattress

We felt the same way at about the same time. He was pulling to standing and throwing things out and hanging over as if he thought he could get it. Eventually the novelty of it all wore off and at 9 months he still hasn't escaped. He stands all the time and still throws things out but he is safe. My aunt did need to get a crib tent for her son at 11 months because he finally did escape.

Where do you get a crib tent? I looked in BRU the other day and didn't see any.

Re: Lowering the crib mattress

You can definitely get something like a crib tent if it will give you peace of mind but I highly doubt he can climb out of the lowest level at 6 1/2 months old. This is from a Mom of 2 climbers. No doubt he will shock you at some point in the future with his crib escape skills but I just cannot see even the most athletic 6 1/2 mth old climbing out. I know what you mean about it not looking low enough - they need to make cribs with a top rail too LOL

ETA: If you havent removed the bumpers, you may want to consider that as well.

Re: Lowering the crib mattress

Before my son was a year, we had him in the toddler bed setting. He had climbed out a few times and I wa petrified he would get hurt!
I put up the guard rail, and that is what worked for our family.. he was also walking though..

Re: Lowering the crib mattress

We did take the bumper out because he was using that to pull himself up. Even at the lowest setting, if he's standing up his chest is above the top rail so even if he doesn't climb out, he may fall out being his head is so heavy. He is probably the most squirmy and athletic little baby I've ever seen. Even changing his diaper takes two people sometimes because he will not stay still.

I think we'll lower it to the third position and keep an eye on him. If he still climbs, we may have to get a tent.
