Question for those who renovated a bathroom?

I mean EVERYTHING... new sheetrock, tiled walls and floor, new tub, toilet bowl, sink, skylight...
How long did your bathroom take from beginning to end?
We have a friend who we are probably going to hire to do the bathroom, but he is a little on the slow/lazy side, so I want to make sure we stay on schedule. I want everything COMPLETELY DONE before July 1. Is that reasonable?

Re: Question for those who renovated a bathroom?

That's a reasonable timeframe - depending on how much tile work you have to do (are you tiling a shower area?). We did each of our bathrooms over (completely gutted), and the larger one with a tiled shower took about 5 weeks (we were lazy, plus our vanity was backordered), the smaller one with a shower surround took about 3 weeks.

If he's really lazy, it can go much longer, since there are a lot of details - so just stay on top of him.

Good luck!

Re: Question for those who renovated a bathroom?

in my opinion, that is a very reasonable time frame. From demoltion to finish, it only took about 3 weeks for out bathroom to be done. They stripped it down to the bare beams, then build it back up again. Hope this helps!!

Re: Question for those who renovated a bathroom?

My dad is a contractor and I had my bathroom ripped down to the studs, half the wood replaced due to water damage, new pipes, new plumbing, heating and electric in 1.5 weeks. He didn't move any faster b/c I was his daughter - he actually moved slower LOL.

Your timeframe is DEFINITELY more than reasonable. Good luck!!!!!

ETA Pics - before, ripped out and finished (the day that bathroom was done was the happiest day of my life LOL - I hated that 1980's bathroom).

Re: Question for those who renovated a bathroom?

The bath in my parents home took about 6 months - we used a friend/contractor also on the lazy side.

DH is currently redoing our half bath, it was gutted in December and just recently was sheetrocked... still waiting on the tape job to be finished before the tiling starts. Dh goes in for surgery on his shoulder the beginning of next month and will need to be inactive for at least a month after that. I'm not going to hold my breath. Chat Icon

To answer your question, yes your time frame is reasonable. But in my experience, renovations of any sort, rarely stay on schedule...or budget - but that's another story all together.

Good luck. I hope all turns out according to your plan.

Re: Question for those who renovated a bathroom?

We replaced everything except the tub and toilet...it took about 3 weeks, but they weren't allowed to work on weekends or holidays and only between 9 and 5 p.m. You can definitely do it all by July 1.

Re: Question for those who renovated a bathroom?

We ripped everything out of our bathroom as well. New tub, toilet, sink, ceramic tile, redid the ceiling, etc. We had a family friend do this job along with 2 other workers and it took about 1 month to complete it.

It was very frustrating because it was our only bathroom and I had to wake up early before work, go to my mother's house and shower every day because we didn't have the shower put in yet. AND we ripped apart our kitchen and bathroom at the same time so we had work going on in both areas...Chat Icon

Re: Question for those who renovated a bathroom?

we ripped out our bathroom to the studs and the worst part was tiling the shower.

if you are putting in a shower stall...than having the grade ont he cement floor is very important (we hired out for that) - than you need a lot of patience putting the tiles on the wall.

drywalling is a multistep project as well, so that could be a few days of mudding and drying, and if you are tiling on the wall, it will take a bit longer.

its possible to do it all in a week - so I think a month is reasonable for someone on the "lazy" side

good luck!!

Re: Question for those who renovated a bathroom?

I'd say July 1 is very reasonable...however, we're in the process of renovating our bathroom and it's taking longer than a month...only because my BIL is helping us do it and he's got his own business to run so there's never any time for our bathroom!!!
