General question about houses

Houses that are built on a slab - positives and negatives? I know there is no space to really run pipes such as when you have a crawl space or basement, but other than that, anything to consider? Thanks!

Re: General question about houses

Positives are that you can never have a flooded basement.

Negatives is not having useable space for storage or for anything else.

I agree. I own one.

The other negatives...

….pipes are run beneath the floor and if you have a leak the cement floor will have to come up to fix it. I had this happen in my existing home and it wasn't pretty. Luckily they dug in the right place and found the broke pipe. This doesn't happen often though.

….bugs are a problem if the property is not treated regularly.

This is what I was going to say. My cousin's house had a leak and they had to go through the cement floor. My aunt said it was not a pretty sight. I think I may actually prefer a flooded basement! I've been through a couple of those at my parent's house!

Re: General question about houses

according to the termite company i am working with, they told me that you are more likely to get termites if you live on a slab house. not that it seems to make a difference since you hear about tons of homes not on slabs and having termites as well.

Re: General question about houses

Danielle and I live in a Levitt cape which is built on a cement Slab just like all Levitt Houses.

The problem with cement slabs are that you are more succeptable to bugs...We had Termites, but we now have a contract with Terminix. We hardly ever see any bugs now.

The storage is a problem. We have a garage which is packed and only a few closets in the house, which are all being used. I will be buying a shed soon....

If you get a house with no basement, make sure it has a garage or 1 or 2 large sheds...

Yes, you definitely need to have the home treated regularly for bugs. I use Suburban Pest Control. When I first moved here 8 or 9yrs ago there where many bugs. Now I hardly see any. Suburban Pest Control treats the exterior or interior (if necessary) once every couple of months and I can call them anytime for service at no additional charge if I have a problem.

Re: General question about houses

do you still need to have the house treated regularly if you are a partial slab? I have a tiny utility basement, and I notice all the bugs down there! I thought it had something to do with basements (although they are not termites at least - spiders and beatles)
