Kitty litter disease

Does anyone know anything about this? Has anyone been tested for it? I have two cats and I was always the one cleaning the litter so I am extremely nerveous.

Re: Kitty litter disease

I was told by my vet that it is VERY rare to have any issues unless you work in an enviroment with animals such as a vet or grooming place. Are your cats indoor only and have their proper shots? If so, wear gloves and wash your hands very good after.

I am also not immune to toxoplasmosis. I do not have a cat, however, my doc said no spring gardeing for me because you never know where a neighborhood cat pooped. It's found in dirt too.

Re: Kitty litter disease

Its spread outside. If you have a cat that goes outside at all you shouldnt be cleaining any cat litter. Inside cats , if they have been inside their entire lives have less then a 99.9 chance of getting it, it nearly impossible, but You can always wear plastic gloves and that would protect you enough from an indoor cats litter.

def. get tested - my mom told me she had this before she was preg. - she didn't even own a cat- but had cat sit for a strictly indoor cat - for a few days and she is big on the gloves etc (she was a nurse at the time)

I was advised to have DH changing the litter 1 yr before we want to TTC to take no chances

Re: Kitty litter disease

I was diagnosed with the CMV virus. I was told that it can come from cats. Its very common, and can only be dangerous if contracted in the first trimester. Unfortunetely i did contract it in the first trimester, but my daughter turned out fine. This virus sticks forever.

And do NOT NOT NOT change the litter anymore! INfact, do not change the litter until you are done having children.

Please have your DH change it.
You're carrying a baby around for 9 months, he can surely change the litter Chat Icon

Re: Kitty litter disease

That's good that you are no longer changing it.
My doctor tested me even though I don't own a cat, I thought it was the usual testing.
Definitely ask your doctor to test you for it.
