spinoff to sleeping in bed question

I feel so weird reading these posts - my daughter has never spent one night in our bed....she was in the bassinet until 8 weeks and then the crib in the next room....her sleeping in our bed just never even seemed an option - are we the only ones who don't do this? My best friend sleeps with her son also at 15 months, and I just thought that was insane, but I guess not!!

Re: spinoff to sleeping in bed question

I never had her in our bed at night, but sometimes when I was home alone with her during the day and she was going through colic I would nap with her in the bed. I was just so exhausted and she'd cry if left alone. Once that ended she's always been in her crib or the Pack N Play for naps and bedtime.

Re: spinoff to sleeping in bed question

We were the same way. Jack slept in our room in a pack n play the first few weeks but pretty much only because we had Grandparents in town and that was real difficult for my husband because he works wierd hours and is a light sleeper so he didn't deal well with newborn noises. We both had taken naps with the baby on the couch though but that ended pretty fast as well.
We only have a queen size bed, live in a ranch home and to keep ourselves married it just wasen't an option for us.
But growing up my parents didn't allow it either, now if he is is sick (just like my mom did) I will sack it out on the floor or in the glider in his room but that's the closest we have ever come.
I can't even imagine co-sleeping because Jack is all over the place when he sleeps and he has learned when he sees both of us in bed it's airplane time not time to cuddle in for a nap. Sometimes I wish I could just bring him to bed with me and catch some zzzzzzz's especially now with Dh away but he would most likely not settle down at all.

Our bedroom is pretty much sacred ground to us and sort of off limits from Babyland or we try our hardest to make it that way.

I don't have a problem with it but were just not that way.. I didn't babywear either...

I toss and turn all night. I'd be terrified Kevin would go tumbling from the bed. I know I'd be too tense to get any sleep myself.

Same here, Aidan was in a cradle in our room for a few weeks then right to his crib in his own room where he slept MUCH better.... as so did I! Chat Icon

I did try it, I woke up stiff as a board and did not move all night. I kept thinking we would accidently pull the covers over his head.

Andrew has never slept in our bed either. There was one night he woke up crying, and I slept with him on the pull out couch to have some more room and so DH could get some sleep. Another night, he woke up, and when he didn't go back to sleep, I took him to our bed, where he kept saying "mommy and daddy night night", so I took him back to his crib and he went to sleep!

I could never do it. we only have a Queen size bed and there is no room for 3 people, as small as they are!

Re: spinoff to sleeping in bed question

I take naps with Emily in bed sometimeds -- and there were 2 nights when we first moved that I had to fall esleep with her in my bed because she just wouldn't go to sleep and was SOOO overtired --- but that's it, after she was sleeping she went in the crib. I miss her so much at night and her room seems so far away, but our bed is only a full and there just isn't room for her to sleep safely with us.

Talia has been in her crib since day one. I just think everyone has to do what works for them.

Jake has never slept in our bed. That was something I swore I would never do. I did not want him to get used to sleeping with us and thennot be able to break the habit. When he was born he slept in the pack - n -play and then at 6 months old moved to his crib. I don' think I could get an ounce of sleep with him next to me. I would be too nervous.

Re: spinoff to sleeping in bed question

We never put Alex in our bed... I was always too scared that either myself or DH would roll over on her, and Alex is a VERY VERY noisy sleeper, which made it impossible for us to get any sleep even when we kept her in the pack n' play in our room. I tried once to sleep with her in the guest bed and it was a miserable failure. She kept waking me up and I kept waking her up. When we moved her to the crib in her room, everyone slept much better!

Re: spinoff to sleeping in bed question

Well, I swore I'd never do it too...but once he was here I just couldn't relax without him next to me. Never once did I fear sleeping with him in our bed - him sleeping alone in the bassinet or crib was my worst nightmare. I did try it though and he wasn't happy in either. I know I've never ONCE forgotten he's next to me or have rolled onto him. I am totally aware that he is there and sleep much better with him next to me. It's not for everyone... and while it works for me it may not be working for him since he doesn't sleep thru the night. But for now I know that I wouldn't miss these nights for the world. Waking up and staring at him or just watching him sleep is so amazing to me and I couldn't imagine it any other way for us.

Re: spinoff to sleeping in bed question

I don't have a fear of Michael sleeping with us, I just never wanted to get into the habit - I know how hard it is to break. I personally feel that a baby should be in his/her crib - of course on occasion if Michael is not feeling well and wakes up at night, I will bring him to bed with me and even then, I will always bring him back to his crib when he's asleep. I do enjoy snuggling with him, but I just couldn't get myself to get into this habit. I'm not a fan of co-sleeping either, I just feel it causes problems in the future for both - the parents and the baby... I mean when do you have snuggle time with your husband?

BTW - I'm speaking in GENERAL not pin pointing...

of course things are different in each household, I just couldn't do it.

Jack doesn't sleep in our bed either. I would never get a good night sleep. I would be to afraid we would roll over on him. Plus between the 2 dogs and my husband there is no room!!!

I am not a fan of children sleeping in their parents bed, to each his own but I wouldn't do it.

Re: spinoff to sleeping in bed question

I was another one who had said that I would never let my DD sleep in my bed well she wound up getting sick with a very very high fever I had her sleeping in my bed with me. IT did cause a little problem where I have to lay in bed with her ( an extra bed that is in h er room) till she falls asleep and then she goes into her toddler bed. She sleeps in there all nite but thats the only thing that I have to do with her.

Re: spinoff to sleeping in bed question

Christopher slept in our bed with us for the first two weeks, until I woke up one morning just as DH was shifting his pillow over Christopher's face. After that, it was no more bed for him.
He refused to sleep in his bassinet and would only sleep in his car seat, so he slept there for the next two weeks. Finally, when he was a month old, we started putting him in his crib and despite the fact that people told me that he was too young, I used the Ferber method. After about a week, he not only started falling asleep as soon as he was put in his crib, but he started sleeping through the night as well.

My son sleeps in our room in his bassinet but I'm too scared to bring him in bed with us. My husband moves around so much in his sleep and I know I wouldn't sleep at all scared that DH would roll over on DS.

Re: spinoff to sleeping in bed question

I just have a question - for those who or considered sleeping in bed with their children - why? did you sleep in bed with your parents when you were babies/kids?

Seriously this is an honest question, I'm just not sure how parents start sleeping with their babies from the beginning...

I did not sleep with my parents, we started sleeping with her because it was the only way she would sleep. We did not plan it that way at all.
I have been afraid to put her in our bed so we slept with her on the couch for a long time. It was horrible.
Now she is sleeping in a co sleeper attached to our bed.
At this point, because I have slept with her so long, I think I need her to be next to me or I will freak out (my own issues I guess).

Honestly, I have no idea if I slept w/ my parents. I don't think that has anything to do with it though. You may not see the point in it, but for some of us it's the most natural thing. Yes, we may have issues down the road as they get older, but for now this is what's right for us.

Re: spinoff to sleeping in bed question

Jake has never spent a night in our bed but I have taken a nap or two with him in our bed and so has DH but those were rare treats in the beginning only.

This was something I felt strongly about - that I would never let him sleep in our bed overnight. He slept in our room for the first month or so and then it was in the crib. He sleeps better, so do we, plus we get our couple time in our bed at night. That was very important to me.

Logan has never slept in our beds at night. In the beginning maybe a nap here or there but never through the night. It was just something we never needed to do. He slept in the bassinet for 4 months and has been in his crib in another room ever since.

Im not sure either if I slept in my parents bed- but with Bryan he had colic in the begginning and then reflux- this is the only way to get ANY sleep and everyone can a agree that a good nights sleep with an infant is worth a illion bucks, since this has been the only way- I have decided to do some research on the long term affects and I have gotten alot of positive feedback- I have heard that it promotes indepence, reduces anxiety and helps children develop into loving caring individuals- despite what many may think. Its definitely a controversial topic and not for everyone but it works for us- we have a king size bed and there is enough room for all three of us and hubby and I do get plenty of alone time on the couch or when Bryan is in the co sleeper- Chat Icon
