SUV's that are BETTER on gas?
Before I get flamed for having an SUV, I have to explain that we need it for the room. We have a huge dog crate that we use to travel with Casey (she does not like riding in the car) and if all goes according to plan, we will need a car seat pretty soon! 
So, we currently have a Jeep Grand Cherokee that my DH uses for work. We are considering getting something else that is a little better on gas mileage but is also capable of having a hitch. We were looking at the RAV4 but you cannot put a hitch on. The Highlander and 4 runner looked nice but the gas is so-so.
Any suggestions?

We have a Saturn Vue and it's not too bad on gas-- and now they also have a hybrid version.

The Ford Escape and the Toyota Highlander both come as Hybrids - can't get any better on gas mileage than that

We looked at the Hybrid Highlander...it cannot go off road.. no big deal to me, but it is to DH.

That's why I wouldn't get it...I take my truck on the beach all the time.
I have a Santa Fe, but it's not that great on gas, about 17 mpg. Maybe look at the Tucson?

My boyfriend's parents just bought a Ford Escape Hybrid. The backseat is very roomy and of course it's awesome on gas. Cute too.

I get 22 mpg on the highway with mine-
my old car didn't get that much more- maybe 26
the reason my SUV costs me so much to fill is the gas tank it about 25 gallons- but it last for over a week

Ford Escape is pretty good and so is the Chevy Equinox.. not bad for SUVs.

I have a Ford Escape -- and while it is not a hybrid I do have to say that I love the car. I would get the Escape Hybrid for my next car in a HEARTBEAT! They came out a few months after I got mine and I was so sad that I missed it!

The Higlander Hybrid gets over 30 MPG.

The subaru forester is sort of a mini suv, but it does give you a lot more room than a car. It's gas milage isn't too bad.

This is most likely the car I will be getting in the future. My cousin just bought an Equinox (saw it last night). I asked her about the gas and she said its so/so. I don't think it gets good local mileage.

We rented a RAV4 in Florida, and we really enjoyed it. It really wasn't terrible on gas. It was more than we're used to (we both drive VW's) but it wasn't terrible. We liked the car
