My birth story... kinda long...

Well here is my story, and before i go into the details, I want to say that what i am about to write is in no way meant to scare any of the moms-to-be out there. The Dr. you choose plays a huge role in your labor and delivery, and well mine was just not a good experience. Chat Icon

The OB group i chose was recommended by so many women at my job with such rave reviews of their practice, thats why i chose them. And i have to say in the 9 months i saw them, i never had any real complaints. My ONLY complaint would be that the group has 2 Dr's and 3 midwives, and thru the 9 months of visits, i saw 1 of the Dr's once, (the one who delivered my son) and the rest of the time i only saw the midwives. And that one visit with the Dr. in the summer was very short and to the point, no real conversation, she seemed rushed. I was also told that upon delivery, it is one of the Dr.'s who deliver and one of the midwives is there too. Fine, sounded beautiful.

So, on Dec. 27th (6days past due date) i went in for a BPP and NST. So the sono tech sees that the fluid level is way low. The Dr. comes in and questions me if i have been leaking? I tell her not that i was aware of, i mean i was damp down there but wasnt sure if it was urine or i was sweating. So she does a vaginal exam takes a swab of some sort puts it on a slide and exams it under a microscope.. she says that there is some areas of rupture in the membrane. So off she sends me to Mercy to be induced. I get to L&D and they tell me they are puting cervidil in to thin out the cervix and sometimes that sends u into your own labor, sometimes it doesnt. So in it goes around 7:30pm. Well around 12 midnight, my contractions are starting to get bad.. real bad.. one of the midwives comes in and says "these arent contractions, its just some cramping"... CRAMPING MY A$$!!! She gives me a stupid sleeping pill, instructs my husband to turn OFF the TV and lights and go TO SLEEP!! (he was sleeping in a chair).

Well around 2am, i thought i was going to DIE! i was dozing off from the sleeping pill, but kept waking when the contractions started. Well at about 5 am, i started slamming my fists into the bedrails, and at one point went to throw myself out of the bed but my DH grabbed me and tried to calm me down. I was in such severe pain, and at that point a nurse comes in and says "you want some pain medicine"?? YEAH YOU MORON!! And it did not help.

At 7am, the midwife came in again, as i'm crying, did an internal, said i was 3-4cm and that i could get the epi. THANK GOD!! I got that at about 8am, and it was the best thing EVER! So i am now sleeping on and off, in and out of consiousness all day. The Dr. delivering is coming in and out, doing things, not saying what she is doing, and my DH and MIL were getting ******. She breaks my water at about 9am, out comes MECONIUM! And she says "the baby has a lot of hair cause the meconium is all stuck to it"... GREAT! just what i want to hear. Then the baby's heartrate dropped and she says "you are buying yourself a ticket to a c-section"... I was so out of it, i didnt' even know what was going on. Then she starts an amnio infusion to flush out the meconium.. and his heartrate came back up. So no c-section...

The day progressed, as i slept, and i kept dilating. My DH questioned her at one point on what was going on, since she wasnt talking to him, and she got annoyed at him, started being sarcastic and saying "your wife was admitted last nite....etc..." she treated him like he was a moron, starting from the very beginning when all he wanted to know was what she was doing at that point. So at around 3 i was 9 and 3/4 dilated, and so my mother in law says " so it should be very soon huh, that she's gonna be ready to push?" The dr. says "no, dont put a time limit on it, thats my job"... so my MIL says "Well i mean it wont be like 5 hours from now, she;s almost at 10 cm right?" and again she says, "i said dont put a time limit on it"... and walks away. The Dr. then says to me, " i suggest you rest, cause pushing is going to be very difficult". Why would you say something like that??

So a half hour later, the epi is wearing off, and they wont give me more. It was time to push. I had such a hard time.. I couldnt catch my breath, and i was so exhausted from no sleep the night before. The contractions were getting worse and worse, and the pain was so bad. And every time i pushed, the Dr. would say, "NO YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG." I was screaming that i couldnt do it, i was hyperventilating, couldn't get air into my lungs fast enough. My DH and MIL were coaching me, and the Dr. was doing nothing. At one point she stepped out of her clogs, and yawned. I ripped my gown down the middle, ripped all my jewelry off and threw it across the room, and the Dr. says "CONTROL YOURSELF!!" At one point i said " i cant do this".. and she says "OH BUT YOU WILL"...

The head was starting to crown and the burning was so bad, i started crying hysterically. Then the Dr. goes to put the stirrups on the table, and cant figure out how to work them, she's fumbling with the levers, all while my legs are in midair and i'm screaming. So then she doesnt say what she's doing, gets out her instruments, injects a needle into my vagina, i jumped clear off the table, as she gives me a dirty look, and then she cuts me. The door swings open to the room and a nurse says "Dr? do u want your Dentist appt today at 6 or 6:30?? And she stops to think for a min... I'M LIKE WHAT THE F IS GOING ON HERE?????????my mil and Dh were livid but afraid to say anything for fear she would take it out on me. Finally another nurse came in prob from listening to me sream for 2 hrs and calmed me down and helped me push and out he came. It was the best feeling in the world. The dr. put him on my chest and i went to grab him and she says" DONT PULL ON THE CORD"....JESUS... so rude she was... my eyes were at half mast at that point, i couldnt keep them open to even look at him long enuf before they wisked him away. The Dr then says to my MIL and DH, "you can go upstairs with the baby while we clean up here"... so my MIL went to grab my purse and she says "NO, LEAVE THAT, JUST GO!! "... WOW! . She stitched me up, said nothing to me, and left the room. The nurses did the rest. Oh and the midwife that showed up (who i thought would stay for delivery) came in about 10am, checked the fetal monitors, then went to walk out of the room and my MIL questioned her on where she was going.. she says "Oh i'm going home to walk my dogs"... and that was the end of her.

It was just a horrible experience for me. My Dr. made this childbirth one i will never forget, and it actually makes me question whether i will have another child down the road. Chat Icon

So that is my story, and yes, now that my little monkey sandwich is here, it all was def worth it, but did i need to be treated the way i was??? I dont think for a first time mother, that her attitude towards me was appropriate. Or maybe I am a baby, and cant tolerate pain well?? Either way, I now know to do more research when it comes to a Dr. in the future. But as it stands right now, a second child for me will be a very very long time away. If at all. Thanks again girls for all your advice and support these past 9 months! And i look forward to seeing all the new arrivals that are "STILL COOKING" Chat Icon

I'm sorry they treated you with such insensitivity!! I would DEFINITELY write a nice little letter to the person in charge there, and let them know exactly how you feel, and how you were treated.Chat Icon

OMG, I have tears in my eyes for you right now. How horrible. I am so so sorry you went through that. Chat Icon Chat Icon I know how emotional and hard it is to push a baby out and to have an ahole doctor like that...I can't even imagine. Please don't think you're a baby. You're NOT! It was all the doc's fault and I personally would say something or write a letter.

Thank God your son is healthy and perfect. CONGRATS! Chat Icon Chat Icon

OMG....I am so happy Jacob is here and doing ok. So many things could have gone wrong! I'd be so upset if that's what happened to me.

I wouldn't even do my post partum appt with them....I'd contact SOMEONE about how you were treated....that's just awful! I am so sorry for your experience and hope it doesn't cause you to not have a 2nd child.

Oh Chee Chee...I am so sorry for what you went through....I have never heard of such disrespect by a doctor. You should file a complaint of some kind.

I am glad the end result was good and little Jacob is there with you.

Congratulations again on your beautiful baby. There is absolutely no excuse for the way you were treated. It was completely unprofessional. I do not think you are a baby, but even if you were and even if you dont tolerate pain well... this is why we hire them. They are suppose to help manage your pain, and take care of you!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: My birth story... kinda long...

I'm so sorry you had such a horrendous experience. As an L&D nurse I try to do my best to be my patient's advocate and keep them well informed. Just know that this is not the norm and not all doctors behave like this. You should definetly write a letter and address it to the hospital as well. At my hospital every letter of complaint gets addressed and we try to do our best to improve.

FM if you want I can recommend some really good doctors (and I've seen them in action). They would be affliated with Winthrop though.

P.S. Congrats on your baby Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: My birth story... kinda long...

I am so sorry that you did not have a good birth experience. I really hate hearing that from anyone since it should be such a memorable time in a positive way. You should really complain to someone about how you were treated and I am shocked that a midwife could be so cold. I purposely chose midwives (which I adored) because I can't stand doctors.

I can promise you this. The memories will fade, the pain will fade, you will fall more and more in love with your son and will be totally willing to do it all over again.

I had natural childbirth and right after I said I'm getting the epidural next time if there is a next time and now 3 months later I would go through all the pain again just to have another baby.

Re: My birth story... kinda long...

Just unbelieveable! I can't believe you were treated so badly. Try not to let that bad experience decide whether you will have another baby or not. I had a wonderful experience with my first and hopefully this one will be a great one too. You just have to find a doctor who will see you throughout your 9 months and see how you are treated then, this will give you an idea of how they will be when you are delivering.

Congratulations again on your baby Chat Icon
