Crib to toddler bed question

Have any of you made the switch from crib to toddler bed before your child climbed/fell out of the crib?

Michael has not done it yet (thank god) but I'm not sure I want to wait too long and risk him hurting himself.

I moved DS before he got out of the crib. I felt like that way it was just because he was a "big boy," not as a response to what he did.

I moved Andrew to a toddler bed just before his 2nd birthday because of the arrival of his little sister. I dreaded it because he absolutely loved his crib and never made any attempts to get out. HE would wake up in the morning and just stay in there for hours!

But his transition went well. He loves his big boy bed in his new room. WE waited for some time before actually putting Lauren in the crib. When we finally did he was excited for Lauren that she got a new bed too. So for us, we transitioned over several months and it went well.
