if you had to be in Times Square at 11am during the week, which train would you take from Ronk?
7:57 AM arrives at 9:17 AM 8:31 AM arrives at 9:56 AM

Penn is 34th street... Times Square is 42nd street-ish... I would take the later one.

the later one- you can get to times square in less then 15 minutes from Penn
walking, cab or subway- either way

I agree - the later one. Times Square is about a 10 minute walk from Penn.

my gut instinct is to take the earlier train - since the LIRR is always so reliable

the later one gets you in with an hour to get to time sq, plenty of time even if it is late

definitely the later one - you will get there with plenty of time to spare. Sit in the front of the train and then hop on the A/C/E to times square....

Definitely the later one. You could walk the 8 blocks in about 15 - 20 minutes.
