Would you take a job in the City at night?

I'm going back to school in January full time during the day. My old job from Manhattan called me to ask me if I want my job back. I left there 2 years ago to move to Florida. Well, to make a long story short, it didn't work out and we moved back to NY, but this time to L.I. instead of S.I. I always give this job as my reference. So with that, my old boss found out I was back in NY. I told her that I cannot accept full time because I'm going back to school so she offered me a position for 2 nights a week 4 1/2 hours each day for a really good pay. Should I go for it. I'm afraid with commuting, it might not be worth it. Thanks

Re: Would you take a job in the City at night?

im horrible, b/c it would take ALOTTT of $$$ to get me to work in the city, But, i'm a baby like that.

the way i i would look at it though- figure out what your salary would work out to basedon how much youre getting paid per hour, then factor in your commuting time, and divide the salary by the working hrs+cost of commute (LIRR?)+commuting hours to see what it comes out to per hour. If its higher than a job you would get on the island, and you need the money, then i guess go for it, but if you could find something that would could out to more $$ per hour after the commute is figured in higher, then i would go with that.

(sorry if that was confusing... i was tryng to word it correctly Chat Icon Chat Icon )

I know you're right. I mean it's not a lot of money, but it's certainly a lot of $$$ for only 9 hours of work. With going back to school full time, I don't want to work on the weekends, so I thought this might be good for me. I might have to find something else for a little bit extra $$$$ also. If she could only give me 3 days.....

Being I live on L.I. they can only drive me to Penn Station, which still isn't that bad. I guess I can look into driving in???

I couldn't because of family stuff but if I didnt have them and it was really good money - yes I'd take it. It would have to be significant enough to want me to pay for the 10 trip ticket. What are the hours?

I would not drive in at night. The main advantage to the train is that you can study like those little Chaminade kids do in the morning.

I would do it then. If you get a car to penn, I think you would be okay. Maybe go to the city one night during the week, and see at 10:30 who is on the train.

I would not drive in either. Not when every 1 in 7 attacks occur in parking garages.

IT is such a shame that safety has to always be in our minds. All you are doing is going to work....it makes me so mad.

I would be parking my car at the Huntington train station. Is that a safe station to be getting in my car at night? I used work around there and some areas didn't seem so safe. Does anyone know?

I'm from S.I. I used to live off Fingerboard road and travel to the City everyday for 10 years. I used to walk to my bus. I'm just afraid of the parking lot. I have to go over this again with my husband. I don't think he thought of that......

he probably didn't. It never even crossed my mind. Wow Fingerboard!! that is my dream to be right there, but those poor people never get a seat going in. Everynight though, I am like oh if only I lived here I would be home. Chat Icon

I'm sure once I mention the parking lot to him, he's not going to like it.

Chat Icon Believe it or not, I just about always got a seat. That bus stop has many buses that stop there. So if one was packed, I'd just wait for the next. Oh those good old days. I certainly don't miss that !

You've got people getting off in Huntington at all hours (I park there or Northport). What I do if I had a dinner meeting is get my keys out on the train, talk to my husband on the way to the car. They have security in the parking garages at night.

The issue is that you are aware of your surroundings while you walk. At least in Hungtington you're aware of the area. Getting tricked into a false sense of security is just as dangerous at a "safer" train station.

I say try it - if you hate it, tell her it's not working out.

I'm a baby also, so there is no chance I would work in the city at night.
