what does she like to do? I'd try to appeal to her likes, whether that's fashionable clothes from her cool aunt, or a make up case wth lip gloss, nail polish, nail file, maybe a CD or DVD. She kind of at that age where she's not a baby but not a teen either. How about a board game?

I got my cousin a calligraphy set from barnes and nobles, she uses it a lot. Makes invitations and stuff

My neice is 9 now and loves sparkly things...rings, bracelets, hair things, etc. She's into Bratz and may still be into the disney princess thing.

My niece just turned 9 in August and I treated her to a day of shopping. I picked her up, we went to lunch, then went shopping to whatever store she wanted to go too (I gave her a budget which worked out educationally because every store we went into I had her tally up her purchases and figure out how much she had left to spend) and then we got mani's and pedi's together.
She LOVED it!!!!

DH has a 9 year old niece. We always ask her mom what she wants...LOL we'll ask what CD she wants, board games.
She also likes clothes from limited too for kids and make-up stuff...
