Just a little In-law vent

My in-laws were here over the weekend. I actually like them and get along with them, but this trip they just annoyed me.

First, they always have to stay with us. We live in a 700 sq. ft. one bedroom apartment. 4 adults and 3 cats is way to many people in our place.

Second, I requested that they not smoke in my home because I am preggo and the smell really makes my nauseous. Well, I go to take a shower and when I get out they are smoking in the kitchen!!!!Chat Icon

Third, they asked about how I was going to deliver the baby and if I was going to breast feed. When I replied that I was going to have an epidural and that I was not sure about breastfeeding (one reason is that I have implants), they decided to give me a very unwelcome lecture on how much better natural childbirth and breastfeeding are to any other options.

Then the topper was that as they were leaving they said that they would be back in a couple of weeks to stay for a night!!!!Chat Icon I really don't want to come across as the evil wife, but I really don't want them staying here anymore. If we had a house that would be fine, but them sleeping out in the living room, waking up at 7 am and making a lot of noise and smoking in my home just doesn't work for me at all.

Sorry, but I had to get that out!!!!Chat Icon

They are so out of line! Does DH know how you feel? Maybe he can talk to them about staying somewhere (at least while you're preggo!)

Our of respect for their future grandchild, they really need to listen to the NO SMOKING RULE.

THAT IS SO DISRESPECTFUL! Did your DH say anything to them about that???

No, he didn't. He has difficulties confronting his parents. I asked him to ask them to get a hotel next time, but I don't know if he will do it or not.

The smoking was way out of line. As for the unslocited advice about childbirth and BF, it's certainly not their place, but you had better kind of get used to it.
Everyone will tell you what they think to be the best way to raise your baby. You have two options on this one 1) nod and later ignore them or 2) put them in their place. Tell them that you are going to do things your way and that's that. I personally use a combination of the two.

Ugh - I really sympathize on the apt front - we also live an apartment, and I can't imagine having frequent uninvited guests like that in a relatively small space (esp. when pregnant).

The hypocrisy of them smoking in your home while you're pregnant, then proceeding to advise you on the healthiest way to raise your child, is brilliant.

WOW totally out of line. Next time they need to find some where else to stay! The smoking in your home is just something you can NOT tollerate!

If your DH won't speak up, you must. Your house, your rules...no smoking. I can't believe that these people are lecturing you and then smoking in your house while you're pregnant.

I totally agree. I don't even let my grandmother hold Gianna if she's been outside my home smoking.

I would say something if DH doesn't. When I have issues with the IL's I tell DH he better talk to them before I do, and I won't be as nice, and he does it even if he had no plans on doing it in the first place.

He needs to talk with his parents, if they are stepping over boundaries now, it will only get worse when the baby comesChat Icon
