painting a room

Okay, I have no idea what I am doing!

we just moved into a house and want to repaint the rooms upstairs. they have already been painted and we want to change the colors---some of the previous colors are light and some are dark.

What are the first steps I have to take to prepare the rooms before we paint them or do I just paint over the original colors ????????

TIA

Re: painting a room

Make sure the walls are clean, then you have to prime them with a neutral color to even the walls out....then you can paint whatever color you want over that.
you may have to do several coats to cover up any old paint

You will need to first be sure that if any of the rooms need any spackling or sanding (are there any holes or cracks or anything?) after that is done then you can go and pick out the paint color that you will like. Pick out the color and also have the place make you a primer that is tinted with the color that you are painting the walls with.

Make sure you have rags, tarps, tape (it'll make it easier so that you don't get paint on moulding, floor or ceiling.

Get a rod for your roller and several rollers and trays.

You will start first by applying the primer, then you apply the actual paint in the color you have chosen.. you will need a few coats. only advice I can give you is to let the paint completely dry so you can see what the color truly looks like.

I know that when we first painted, I almost fainted because I hated how the color looked at first. But after day 2, I loved it.

Have fun!

Re: painting a room

do you spackle and sand jsut over the old paint in the specific spots needed?

also is home depot a good reliable place to go and get advice and all the equipment including the paint or do you reccomend that I go to a paint store instead?

You'll find that the prep work (getting the walls ready, spackling, taping) takes as much time, if not more, than painting.

As for sanding, just do that in the spots that were spackled. to get off the excess. And if there are any rough patches sand those. We found that the people who were here before us were sloppy, and there were a lot of paint "drips" that dried. We had to sand those off. But you don't have to sand the whole wall.

I got a Black and Decker mouse sander, that was a huge help and it wasn't expensive.

Have either of you ever spackled? I would try and look on hgtv.com, homedepot.com or lowes.com for tips and they have video tutorials as well that lists all the tools you need.. but it's very simple.. Use the quick drying spackle and go over the whole and run the spackle tool over it on its flat side (I can't remember the name of it for the life of me right now), let it dry and then using sandpaper, sand it until it's even and smooth.

and remember the ceiling is painted first, walls second and trim last.

Home Depot is pretty reliable. Some of the people at SOME of the Home Depot's are pretty knowledgeable and will even offer you tips and won't rip you off. I prefer to use Benjamin Moore and for the few dollars more that it costs, to me it's def worth it. I've had alot of problems with Behr paint and had to have a room in my house re-done because of it. But yet, I know people who have had zero problems with Behr, so you can do what is right for you.

I wish you the very best.. Have fun!

all we did was sand the walls (areas that had gloppy paint), spackled, sanded and then cleaned the walls (damp old t-shirts). we never primed. we even painted one of the rooms burgandy over a pale yellow. it took a few coats but looks great.

Re: painting a room

Clean the walls...

Spackle......Nail holes are a nightmare....Because they seem to pop up even after you insepcted the wall and didnt see a hole. We must of found around 300 holes in the walls of this one room when we were spackling my friends house.

After you spackle, take a Damp rag, and go over the area to get rid of any spackle that has clumped up or isnt flat....(You must wait for the spackle to be dry)

Primer

and

Paint the ceiling

Paint the walls

Paint the trim
