Inground Pool inspection?

I am so confused and don't really know how to proceed. Did anyone buy a home with an existing inground pool? How did you inspect it to make sure the equiptment is in good working order? How do you know if the pool is in current code compliance? Is there a company that does pool inspections or do you just pray it works when you take ownership? I have tried calling a bunch of pool maintance companies but no one will help me... What did you guys do?

Im sure that a pool guy would be able to help you but they might be really busy right now, opening up pools.

I wish I knew a pool guy to give you a recomendation. Good Luck!! Chat Icon

Re: Inground Pool inspection?

Is the pool open yet? We bought a home with an IGP, it was unopened at the time, they offered to open it but it was mid April so we opted to take our chances.

If they have serviced the pool themselves, if the pool is open I would ask them to open it and have a pool person go over and inspect the equipment.

If they have been having it serviced, call the company they use and ask them the condition of the pool. That is what we did, they said it was in good condition when they closed it last year --- BUT when they did open the pool there is a "pop out" in the liner now that may cause us to replace the entire liner. If the pool is open though you can easily assess this type of damage for yourself.

If they are unwilling to open the pool and they serviced it themselves, I would require that they put money in escrow until you have the opportunity to open the pool.

Hope that helps.

Re: Inground Pool inspection?

We bought a house with an igp and it was given to us as is--that is probably what the sellers of the home you are looking at will do. That was a question I asked when we were buying our house because we purchased it in the beginning of april and there was no way to check if it worked. To make sure it has all the proper cos will come up in the title report or they might even have it and can tell you. Usually if you don't know prior to closing it shoudl be put in your contract that if you lender requires a co that the seller would have to get one. This weekend we are opening our pool and we hope it works.

In the end most sellers give pools as gifts.

Very true so that there is no liability on their part. Home inspectors as a rule do not insepct pools and spas

i agree. have them open the pool or ask if you can open the pool (actually, it should be open already). speak to the person that has been servicing it or find your own person. the town will have the CO on file.
