Re-Caulking Tub

We need to re-caulk the tub as my dh did such a sloppy job and it is driving me nuts! I am now in the process of cleaning it. My question is, do I have to take off ALL the old caulking and then start over? Some of it is so hard to take off but I want it to look flat and not bumpy from the old caulking.
Thanks!

I would take all the old caulking off....it will be easier to re-caulk without all the old stuff

Remove all the old caulk........Why dont you use grout instead of caulk? It is a cleaner job

Re: Re-Caulking Tub

You need to buy grout. There are two choices, sanded and non sanded. I would buy the sanded grout because it is easier to work with and it looks nicer. You can get colored grout or white grout. It is actually very easy to do. I just did it to our tub the other day. We had some spots missing grout and I took a small spackle knife and filled in all the cracks.....then wiped off the excessive grout with a wet paper towel and it looks excellent.

Do you have pictures of where you need grout? Is it on the middle of the wall, top of the wall, bottom of the wall where the tub is?

Around the bottom only where the tub meets the wall.

Re: Re-Caulking Tub

I would think caulking is easier and cleaner than grout. I need to do this with my tub too - for now, I've just be re-caulking quickly as needed. I should rip it all off and start from stratch though. But caulking overall is really easy to do.

in that case, you should definitely caulk instead of grout. caulking would seal it better then grout would.
