Teachers on Myspace... Question

I've had a few friends in the education field who have begun deleting their myspace accounts because schools are finding them there, and sometimes taking this into consideration when it comes to employment, etc.

Does anyone else know about this? I've decided to go incognito for the time being... Ugh.

Re: Teachers on Myspace... Question

I would be too afraid to have a myspace page because most of my students have a page and would DEFINITELY search for their teachers on it...

Re: Teachers on Myspace... Question

I teach 5th grade, so i don't think any of my kids have pages. but the fact that administrators go looking for teachers, even if they have no reason to, kind of irks me.

Re: Teachers on Myspace... Question

It's really freaky. I actually deleted my account bc I had 15 year old boys hitting on me. The scary thing is that these old, sleezy ladies were posting sexual things on their sites and it was so obvious that they were little boys. One bothered me so much that I wrote to him (he wrote me a sexual type post) and told him how much it bothered me. Days later, he wasn't on myspace anymore. It bothers me that administrators are on it though, and it seems illegal if you ask me.

Re: Teachers on Myspace... Question

My students were discussing this the other day. I just don't use my full last name or first name on there. It makes it a little difficult to track me down I guess.

That's how I feel- I don't put anything appropriate or overly personal on there!

Re: Teachers on Myspace... Question

I personally as a teacher would not have an account on there. For many reasons. I too have nothing to hide, but I do not like my students (more like their parents) knowing anything too personal about me.

Re: Teachers on Myspace... Question

I'm not a teacher, but I just received an article at work from our PR department that says we should advise our students (I work at Kaplan) to take down their Facebook, Friendster accounts because school admission officers at law schools (including Harvard Law) are using it to research candidates.

Re: Teachers on Myspace... Question

I do have mine up and am also a fifth grade teacher... some of my 6-8th grade students are on there (and you should see some of the pictures!!). I've thought of taking it down but I have nothing to hide on there and have actually found a few old high school friends...
