got in HUGE fight with mechanic- need advice!!!!

i have a 2003 Pathfinder- got it in july 2003
i have 30,000 miles on it and was dropping it off to check brakes. Now i knwo alittle about cars etc. I needed front brake pads the most..

This guy was trying to say that i needed front pads but he would have to cut the rotors and that it would take 3 hours and would cost around $375!!!! now i am not an expert but I flipped out- i thought that was too high for a front brake pads only.

I knew this place was a rip off but its walking distance and so convenient!!! Well needless to say I told hiom no way and that I would pick up my car- then he started to tell me well if you dont want the rotors cut I wont?? ***!!!!!

I stormed in there.. I was LIVID!!! just b/c i am a woman doesnt mean you can take advantage. I have had more cars and know more about problems on a car/truck!!!!

do you think the $$ was a little much???

I have no advice since I know so little about cars, but good for you! I think even knowing enough about cars to say "no, you're not screwing me on this" is awesome. I wish I didn't feel like I was such an easy target!!Chat Icon Good luck!Chat Icon

I think it is. DH just had front brakes done on his car and it cost him about $140.

DEFINITELY! Especially, since the pads costs like $50 for 4, and doesn't take longer than changing a tire! I hate when they try to rip us off because we're women! Chat Icon Chat Icon

kristi, do you have a male friend who can take the car in or go with you?

i would advise this -- mechanics are notorious for trying to overcharge women

tell me about it!!! I was so angry!!! He was shocked that I called him on it and demanded my car be taken down right away so I can bring it somewhere else.
I just called my dad and I'm bringing it up to Ct. this weekend I am going up there anyway so my dad will take it to his guy... and then well see the true price....

Thanks for the advice!!

Re: got in HUGE fight with mechanic- need advice!!!!

Good for you for calling him on it. These guys are a rip off!
I had a similar problem last week. I also have a 2003 Pathfinder and I brought it in to have the muffler checked. They told me the piped needed to be replaced and it would cost $725. I said NO WAY and took it over to Meineke. They showed me the pipes and they were fine. Something needs to be welded and it's going to cost $140 to fix.

I can't believe that a car that age with so few miles would need anything but break pads.

thats the thing. i knew something was up when he was trying to get me to get the "better" brake pads for $4 more he said. After that he went into the fact it would take 3 hours for FRONT PADS ONLY?? even if you had to cut the rotors, it takes three hours?? I have heard they can be a rip off... sometimes convenience doesnt pay off!!

Re: got in HUGE fight with mechanic- need advice!!!!

This is why I change my break pads myself...

I know that if you need your rotors cut, that can get pretty expensive!

I hate how people take advantage of women when it comes to cars. It happened to me when I went to get my oil changed. The guy told me that I needed a certain part replaced. This part is supposted to make noise when you shake it. He starts shaking it and says..."See...it's broken" I said to him..."If it didn't make noise then I'd be worried" and then proceded to tell him what it does. (Thank GOD I listened to my father when he told me about cars) Needless to say, he felt like an idiot and just changed my oil...Chat Icon

It sounds right to me. I had a ford explorer. Its expensive to do brakes. When you replace your pads..... if your rotors are notched, and being cut into you have to cut them or replace them. I thought i had to do the brakes on my 2004 Spec-V Sentra. Nissan told me $375, my mechanic told me $300. When my mechanic pulled the tires off he said my brakes were fine. Its more expensive to do brakes when its a truck.

Re: got in HUGE fight with mechanic- need advice!!!!

Stefanie, what do you mean you change your break pads yourself?

Note: I just wanted to add that while I do agree that (some) mechanics take advantage (or try to take advantage) of women, I also think they try to take advantage of anyone (men) who doesn't know anything about cars.

Re: got in HUGE fight with mechanic- need advice!!!!

really $300 for front and rear brakes or just front?... This guys was charging me almost $400 for two front brake pads and 3 hours of labor it takes that long. most people are telling me it doesnt even for a truck.. at first he said he had to cut the rotors and when i started saying that i want my car back im taking it somewhere to get it doneelse he said that wont do the rotors then... so do I need them or not? what was his point?
I know having a truck it would be a little more than a car- Ive dealt with brakes many a times so I know the variety of prices but this I found to be extreme...

Yeah it was $300 for fronts. I trust my mechanic. He would never rip us off. We've been using him for about 15 years. He's located in Bellmore.

I appreciate the info.. I guess I just didnt like the way the guy dealt with me. He had called me to see if I want the more $$ brake pads.. I found that strange. I just said, its a lease, put whatever brake pads are necessary to have them work. I dont need upperclass pads!
Im gettign my car done this weekend at my dads guy so ill see what he says. thanks for th e info though!

I agree that the price seems like it might have been in the correct ballpark for front brakes. My DH has a car dealership and they have a service shop associated with it. Of course, I get all my work there, and I know that they just did front and rear brakes on my dad's Chevy Trailblazer and a few other adjustments, and it was close to $600. A family service shop would not rip off my dad Chat Icon
