bridesmaid at 4-6 wks pp?

hi ladies! I am reposting this from the pg board. Well I am only 5 weeks, and although it is a bit early to worry about this I have to make a decision about my friends wedding. I live in VA, and her wedding is next Oct. in NY. I am due 8/16 and would have a 4-6 week old newborn (depending when I deliver) and have to fly or DRIVE to NY to be in her wedding. What would you guys do? I don't know if that is at all realistic with a newborn, or if it's no big deal and I shouldn't worry about it. Has anyone done this? My Dh suggests I just go and he stays w/the baby, but the thought of that just kills me. he thinks we can't take the baby on a big trip like that so soon. I don't think I can leave it so soon. Has anyone done this? I am going to see my friend in a couple of weeks and want to share the news w/her, but I want to have an idea what I'm going to do about her wedding too bc I'm sure she'll ask. She is a very good friend and I'd hate to miss her wedding, but the baby obviously comes first. Thanks for any advice!!

For me personally...I wouldnt be able to leave my baby..... I still dont leave Ryan and he's 2.5 months old...

I also prob wouldnt bring him with me....You could if you wanted too, but I pretty much kept Ryan inside until he was about 6 weeks old.... I was freaked out by germs...

Re: bridesmaid at 4-6 wks pp?

I can't fathom leaving a 4 or 6 week old, esp. if I'm trying to breastfeed. I think DH didn't realize how hard the first few weeks will be when he suggested I go without him and baby (this is all new to us). I also can't imagine being stressed out at 4 or 6 weeks pp trying to get fitted for a dress etc., and pack to fly to NY and putting that stress on us and the baby, even if it's for one night. I think I have to back out and attend as a guest if we're up to it. Is that unreasonable? Am I being selfish? Please help girls this is a very very close friend. I hope she understands...(but I am not sure she will) Chat Icon

Same here! I had grand plans until my daughter arrived. Now I just cannot leave her. I have gotten better about leaving her with DH but at almost 3 months old I could definitely not be away from her overnight.
Also at 4-6 weeks PP there is no way I would want the hassle of traveling and being in a wedding. JMO. I was in no shape for that physically or emotionally. You are still pretty exhausted at that point and if you for some reason end up with a c section you would still be recovering.
I'm in my friends wedding 7 months PP and even that is overwhelming to me but I know by the time it rolls around things will be much easier.
So personally if it were me I would have to decline. I would also not bring my baby to a wedding. You would have no fun.

I may be in the minority here but I don't see why DH and the baby couldn't go with you and he would stay at the hotel while you are at the wedding.

We went to visit friends in DC (I am in NY)about 6 weeks pp and it was fine. He slept the whole way there and it was actually great to get out.

As hard as it is it is healthy for you to have time for you.

I agree with Jenhos that you should go and have DH stay with the baby. Depending on the wedding times, you could go to the church/ceremony, have DH and baby meet you between the ceremony and the reception to see baby/breastfeed and then go to the reception for a night by yourself with your friends. You will definitely need the time to yourself and what a great way to spend it...all dressed up, with friends at a wedding!

IMO I think the BEST time to travel is when the baby is a newborn! They sleep all the time. Car rides are great. We took Emma upstate (8 hrs away) when she was 7 weeks. Great car ride!!!Chat Icon Go, have fun!!

You took the words right out of my mouth. Our best and easiest trip was when Cole was 5 weeks old.

My SIL was a bridesmaid in her cousins wedding in New Hampshire 4 weeks PP after a C-Section.
She had a great recovery though and traveling with the baby was easy at that time. The entire family was there so that I imagine that was a help as well.

Its really up to you and your body and what you think you could handle.

(oh and probably the LEAST important detail, but she fit perfectly and beautifully into her dress! Chat Icon )

I'm with the others logistically it's easier to take a newborn since they're sleeping so much at that stage.

The only issue for me is you... at 4-6 weeks pp, you're still bleeding, your hormones are definitely not stabilized yet, and if you plan on nursing - you're still leaking. I know I'm not painting a pretty picture for you on the post partum, but you need to be realistic. If you have a c-section (something I have no experience with), recovery is a lot longer. If you are a person who stresses over the stuff, than I'd say it's probably not the best idea. Some people bounce back very quickly from labor. With Maddie, at 6 weeks, I went to a cocktail party/wine tasting & was fine. It was also local.

If it were me, I would plan to go but also be prepared that I may be bailing out depending on health and make my friend aware of it. I would not bail out because I can't leave the baby. I'd take the baby with me. I agree with DonnaMarie - it's up to you & your body.
