Holy tantrums!

My little boy throughs a tantrum whenever he dosent get his way.... He throughs anything and literally hits, whoever is closet to him....

Its too soon for this! Is this really him being "bratty", is he really doing it because he's not getting his way- or is it just a developmental thing, and if so how can I handle it...

I try talking to him... tell him we dont through things, and we dont hit... but he just looks ay me like Im crazyChat Icon

Melanie hasn't done this yet, but when Miranda used to do it I would ignore her. Once she saw that acting out wasn't going to get my attention she stopped.

Re: Holy tantrums!

my nephew is 13 months and he throws a little fit when he doesnt get his way or when you tell him NO!
he throws his head back and throws his body on the floor
I think its just something they do and you can either give in or stand your ground
this is when you create a well behaved child or create a spoiled brat IMO

Re: Holy tantrums!

I totally understand..........my 5 yr old used to do this also and when we were at the store I would try to make her stop sometimes it worked and sometimes it didnt

my friend usually gives in to the tantrums and her kids are NOT the best behaved if you know what I mean

Re: Holy tantrums!

See I also feel like Im being "mean" since my son is so young... therefore end up giving in ALOT...

For ex: he gets mad throws his cup on the floor...I say " we dont throw things on the floor, and now Im not going to pick it up"

But then feel bad- like "what if he's really thirsty" and just end up picking it up....

Its so hard- because he really is still a baby...Chat Icon

Re: Holy tantrums!

oh thats not what I meant by giving in

I mean like my nephew wants to play with the cordless phone and I let him but then he smashes it on the floor so I tell him no honey and take it away and then he throws a little fit....I try not to give in because I dont want to reward him for that behavior
or when he bites my daughter and I tell him no he flips out......even though he is only 1 he still needs to know its NOT OK to bite his cousinsChat Icon

You have just described my daughter to a T! I can't even tell you the things that she has thrown at me. Sadly she has inherited her Mommy's quick temper. If you figure out how to solve this please let me know. I have been struggling with this one for months. I definitely feel your pain on this one.Yesterday we were in BRU picking up a shower gift and she dropped her doll. Ok She threw her doll Chat Icon and one of the employees being really sweet and friendly to her sad you dropped your baby and tried to hand it to her. Well of course my daughter threw the doll at her Chat Icon Chat Icon

Oh and this is the best one- she is in love with saying "thank you" right now. She got mad today, smacked me and then turned and said tank yuuuuuuuuuu Chat Icon Chat Icon

Im guilty of giving into these kinds of things too....

Im more concerned with the hitting...

If he wants the phone he literally just smacks me in the face...I think its more or less him just flaing his arms... but still- not a habit I want him to get into!

He is. I wouldn't think too much about it. He's too young to really understand. I just wouldn't give him immediate attention (whether negative or positive) because then he will learn A + B =C. There's only so much you can do.

Re: Holy tantrums!

We haven't had any tantrums in public yet but for the ones at home, distraction works best for us. First I take away what I need to or stop him from doing what he's not supposed to be doing, I let him throw his tantrum for a few seconds so that he realizes he's not going to get what he wants no matter what he does, and then I quickly distract him with something else.

I think (hope) it's a phase they go through at this age and hopefully not the actual beginning of the terrible two's which is what I hear. Chat Icon

Re: Holy tantrums!

DS started these at about 10 months. I ignored as much as possible. As soon as he calmed down a bit, I would reward him for that with a hug and talk to him about being upset. I'm sure he didnt understand, but I'm hoping that he puts together being calm with getting attention

Re: Holy tantrums!

Welcome to my world! Alex has been doing this since DAY ONE! In the beginning when we weren't quick enough getting her bottle she would become hysterical and start pinching either me or hubby... I try to just ignore it but apparently that's not quite working with my darling daughter!

Re: Holy tantrums!

Ryan is a little over 7 months now and does this from time to time. His favorite thing ever is the TV remote and my cell phone. He ALWAYS wiggles his way over or reaches for it. I take it away and say "NO" in a very stern voice "This is Mommys toy, you have your own." He sometimes will throw a mini-tantrum but I don't give in EVER and slowly he is getting much better. I am a softy with him but know that if I dont start now, he will be 2 years old throwing himself on the floor in Toys R Us when he doesn't get the toy he wants. Anyways, I know what you mean about being in public compared to home.. much different situation. But, I guess the key is consistency and to keep it up. Good luck! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Holy tantrums!

All of our peers, family members and colleagues say that we will have a kid who will be walking by 4 months, talking by 3months and be the best behaved kid around because I am a Behavior Analyst.
Deep down I fear all rules going out the window because she is my little squeak.

I can however help with other people's kidsChat Icon

Re: Holy tantrums!

its their way of communicating since they diont have the words yet to tell you what they want or dont want....from what i learned, its best to ignore the situation and distract and redirect his attention on somethng else until hes old enough to understand right and wrong...my 11 month old does it now with my glass cabinet..anytime she goes over to it, she turns around to look at me to see if im watching her touch it and then she laughs...its getting better now that i take a toy and play with it to distract her attention....

I would say around Ryan's age but it has gotten really bad since she turned 14 months.
