For Those Of Us WHo Write Checks....Just an FYI

I recently wrote a check payable to cash for a charity thing in the amount of $20. The check posted to my account for $120!!!! Well, thank God I had my carbon copy to prove that I had made it for $20. The person who cashed the check wrote "One" in front of the "Twenty" and wrote a "1" in front of "20". It was obviously Fraud, but I had to close out my checking & savings acct. and open new ones. It was a mess. The bank manager told me that it's so common that it's scary. Make sure you:

Write out the amount as close to the left side as you possibly can.

Write the amount right after the $ sign as close to the $ as you can. Not allowing spaces to include other numbers.

People will try anything to change a check & in this case they were successful! DH & I were very upset.

Thats freaking DISGUSTING that a charity would do something like that. Like that is going to encourage others to donate?!?!?

Now the bank is trying to resolve it and since my acct. was closed & left w/ 1.00 two things cleared on my acct. & they are charging me $60 for overdraft fees!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sonia that totally suxs. Thank you for taking the time to advise us all on this. I have just started writing checks for my business and from now on I will be sure to put a # or $ sign before the actual number!!

Another tip - I had a friend who had a server in a restaurant add a tip on to the total bill after they signed the CC receipt, even though they had already left a tip in cash. My DH often writes $0 in the tip portion if he is leaving the tip in cash.

In regard to taking the $ back...I think the issue is the actual person who distorted the check that is disgusting...maybe not the charity. I wouldnt necessarily take back my $ or "Out" the company. The charity is still deserving its the jerk that did this to you that is the criminal. Its a shame...this con...probably stole more then 100 from just you. Did you make the charity aware of the situation? I assume so since you are getting your $ back. What was the charities reaction to this ...just out of curiosity?

Also safety in writing checks be sure to use a "wet" ink pen because ballpoint pens have removable ink...AHHHHH dont believe me take a check written with a ballpoint pen submerge the check in nail polish remover and watch the ink float off the check...use a stick rub gently while in the remover and there will not be a trace of ink on it.....

BTW- I have done this a million times, never had a problem... Just Kidding.....

Well, the check was for a church. It was a charity check since it was for a charity the person was claiming to be doing. I called the chucrh he claimed to be from and they didn't know who or what I was referring to! I think he was using the name of the church and just keeping to the money for himself. I told the bank I wanted to prosecute. It's not much but who knows how many people this person has done this to.


WoW! Thats so much worse! So its not even a charity...its just a scumbag! Can they trace him down? I assume he went to one of those check cashing places. What a jerk!!!! Totally prosecute.




I looked at the check and we couldn't read what co. or bank cashed the check. It may have been a check cashing place. He wrote just one name on the check. No last name. Azz!!!!!!!!!!!
