GREAT advise. THat's what I would do. I am the type of person that needs to vent. Anthony just to be by himself and watch tv, drink beer. Then when he's ready, he vents.

Either talk about it (if it's family-related he usually likes to vent), give him space, or do stuff to keep his mind off of it (dave and busters, movies, etc.). I have to figure out what type of upset and what method of helping will work.

I let him talk and am affectionate with him. I don't leave him alone, because then I know he won't talk about it and it keeps him upset longer.
For me, I like to be left alone for a while, and then I can talk about it. It takes time to figure out how other people handle sadness and stress, and I have learned that we handle things very differently.

I do something silly to make him laugh, after that I leave him alone for a while until he's ready to talk or he gets over it.
