Giving babies water in this heat...

Do you give water to your baby since the weather has gotten hot & humid?
I mean, they really have no way of telling us thay're thirsty (at least my 5 1/2 month old doesn'tChat Icon ).
I saw a girl giving some to her little guy today who is around Alex's age, guess that's what made me wonder.
I'm going to ask her Dr at our next visit, but I was just curious.Chat Icon

Re: Giving babies water in this heat...

Ive been giving Ryan water since he was a few days old per my Dr's request....

Now that its hot and he's a little older, I give water and/or some juice in a cup... (however he perfers just plain water)

Re: Giving babies water in this heat...

Drs have such different opinions on this.

My first ped told us NOT to give a child much water in the first year Chat Icon since they get all they need from formula (and I guess enough liquid from BM)... Im a huge water drinker and this totally didnt make sense to me. I think I did give him a few ounces here and there, esp in the summer (he was 8-12m).

Then my 2nd ped, when I told them this, looked at me like I Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
He thought that was the worse advice ever and to absolutely give a baby water, esp during a hot summer.

Water is not something you should give without a doctor telling you to. The baby should continue to nurse or get a bottle instead of water. Water is empty calories and could make your baby not eat their normal calories each day.

This is what my ped. told us. He did say though that if it was above 90 degrees and you were someplace without airconditioning... then it would be OK to give the baby a couple of oz. of water.

That's what I was told by my pediatrician.

This is EXACTLY what my pediatricians told me.

I tend to always offer a little water or watered down juice in a sippy cup. You just want to make sure she isn't replacing a bottle with water.

Re: Giving babies water in this heat...

Mu ped said water is ok when she has a cold and stuff, no more then 4 oz a day.

I don't give ger water although I have, and she is starting to grab for my water bottle so I let her drink some.

I give Alyson water too....I actually introduced the sippy cup and I'm sure most of it gets ON her instead of IN her.

She does fuss when she's thirsty....there have been times when it's time to eat, but she won't take her food until she gets a few sux on a bottle. Sometimes she'll fuss through her whole feeding because she's thirsty.

Re: Giving babies water in this heat...

I have been giving my DS bottled water since he was 6 months old in a sippy cup. I don't measure, he usually will only drink ~3-4 oz max a day. He enjoys it though and if anything, it helps with preventing constipation.
