electric etc when moving into a co-op question

This is probably a really stupid question. We're responsible for paying the electric in our co-op. How would I go about transferring the electric in a co-op from the old owners to ourselves? Do I have to wait until we're in the apartment? We're closing Friday (sellers are moving out this weekend and we're moving in Monday) so can I call this week to transfer it over?

Yes - you can call them and tell them the date that you are moving in. They will tell you either how to do a reading from the meter when you move in and call them with the info, or they will just do an estimate based on the date. Personally I found the estimate to be much easier since you will have a million things going on that day!

I think we called and told them the date we were moving in and at midnight of that date, the service switched into our name. I don't know how they read the meters, but the old owners got their bill and we got ours.

Call them and tell them the day you are closing and that is the day you want the electric transferred in your name.
