My $.02 about the resume!

I receive on average one new resume per day. I see many that I would love to call the person and say hey, if you change this or that it would so stand out from the rest and really get noticed. So, I thought I would start a thread to give a business owners perspective. Heck, it may even help you get your resume noticed. Please remember it's just my opinion and not gospel! Chat Icon

Okay, here goes number one!

1) Do not send an unsolicited resume with the cover letter addressed Dear Sir or Madam. Call the company and find out who the resume should be addresses to (and never end a sentence in a preposition like I just did Chat Icon). Makes a world of difference when it goes to the correct person (or in some cases the correct department). And when a letter has my name on it guess what? I make a point to read it!

So rule #1 - Address your resume to a real person!

I have been on search committees that have reviewed hundreds of resumes. My suggestion is to check your grammar and spelling. If you are not very good at this, have someone else look at it for you.

Your resume is the first thing a potential employer is evaluating about you. When I see spelling and grammar errors, I think "If they didn't put 100% effort into preparing the resume, how much effort will they put into their job?"

rule #3 - have a parent who works at the carreer center at stony brook who will show your resume and cover letter to about 5 different counselers in the department Chat Icon

rule #3..If you have an insane plan to write a book called "Moby D.ick in Space" and you are involved in organisations that follow UFO's and crop circles, please don't put that in your resume for the role of CEO of a major real estate company

just my 2 pence...from 8 years working as a project manager in candidate management at a Recruitment Advertising Agency

did I mention that I screen hundreds of resumes a week...yawn

I am amazed at the number of people who don't spell check their resumes or their cover letters. Sure, I forget to spell check, but not on a resume. Is spellcheck a word, or is it 2 words?

And people who send their resumes by regular mail should use decent paper!!

Oh you'd be amazed - I was just interviewing for a career counselor position in my office - and some people had blatant spelling errors on their resume. And these are people who are claiming they can teach others how to write effective resumes!!!

Thats great advice, I never even thought of doing this. If the ad doesn't list a person, I always write "To Whom It May Concern."

Get yourself a decent e-mail address if you want people to take you seriously....

Also, make sure the sentence structure, tense, and design is consistent.

For example, for a past job, don't put "performs weekly reviews of paperwork". It's a past job, so it should be a past tense.

Also, if using bullets, make sure they are all the same size and style. And that they all line up for all sections.

If you absolutely must have a second page, make sure your header with your name, address, phone and email is at the top. So if they get separated, they will know who it belongs to.

Only use true-type, professional looking fonts. I find Times New Roman to be the easiest to read for resumes.

Avoid listing any affiliations that don't provide you with valuable assets that you can apply to the position.

Work in the keywords that are listed in the job description, and make sure there are least two at the beginning of your Employment section as "attention grabbers". Draft more than one resume with different focuses if the jobs you are applying for are in a wide range of skill sets.

Ditto on the professional email address. Try to register with your name. Add a period in between your first and last name if you have to, to get registered. Gmail is a good resource for this.

Yes Yes Yes - do not make one resume and send it to the world! Yuck! Chat Icon This used to be the case when the only choice for a professional looking resume was to have it printed on tiffany stationary. Tailor each resume to the specific company and/or position! Also, if you are going to have someone help you write your resume make sure the wording is not some writer's flamboyant way of exaggerating your abilities. The wording should fit your personality. I have interviewed people because they had a resume (wording style and personality) that fit the position we were looking for but the person I interviewed was a very different personality type from what the resume portrayed. Do not waste your time in this way. The wording style should fit your personality.

OMG....I told a friend that about her resume...she had some crazy thing like Ilikecats....and she said to me...but that is my email address and I do like cats!!

Two more suggestions:

This has been posted before - but google your name to see what comes out. I know many managers haven't called people because of what comes up on myspace pages.

Great suggestions. You can also google your email address, which should be more specific to you. I use my email address with my name in it only for jobs.

And you can turn around and do the same thing to your potential employer. I always find out the name of the person I'm interviewing with, and look them up on the internet. I've found some good (and not so good) things out about them in the process.
