14 week and Downs testing

My dr told me to come back at 14 wks and be tested for Downs. Is this the AFP or the triplescreen? He didn't mention anything about any other testing... just said Downs. But maybe he just said Downs because that is what they primarily look for? Thanks in advance! Chat Icon

Re: 14 week and Downs testing

Hmm.. I'm not sure. I had my ultra screen at about 13 weeks and the AFP at 16 weeks.

Re: 14 week and Downs testing

I declined this testing because there alot of false positives and after discussing it with my dr , i said if my baby did have downs i wouldnt terminate so why worry for 5 months ...besides like i said they r wrong alot, and didnt want to be worried & upset for no reason! .....best of luck!!!

I am not sure either but I thought I read somewhere that AFP testing is done between 15-17 weeks of gestation.

Re: 14 week and Downs testing

This is probably the Ultrascreen. AFP is usually done around 16 weeks and if he's planning on an amnio its between 15-18 weeks (I think). The Ultrascreen is done around 14 wks and its a high def sono, kjind of lilke a level 2.

Re: 14 week and Downs testing

My first sono was at 9 weeks and I made an appt for the downs testing 4 weeks later which actually makes is 13 weeks. I guess if I went at 8 weeks when I should have, this test would take place at 12 weeks. Is the downs test called the AFP? Or is it just an ultrascreen? Just not sure if it has an offical name to the test. Thanks! Chat Icon

ETS: Does the ultrascreen give any indication for Downs?

Re: 14 week and Downs testing

Ok, the 14 week ultrasound is not your AFP test. However, they may do your triple screen at your 14 wk. ultrasound. It checks for more things than just downs.

The Ultrascreen is a high def sono and the tech (or doctor) performing the sono measures certain things like the thickness of the base of the skill for one. It's really just a diagnostic tool to see if there MIGHT be any signs that something could possible be off and require more testing. They take a little blood too and the blood results and the sono results together will give the doctor a number that will tell him/her what percentage change you have of having a baby with downs or other chromosonal abnormalities.

AFP Is another diagnostic test where they prick your finger and test your blood - again to see what your risk is of your baby having certain abnormalities.

If you Google both terms you will find lots of info Chat Icon We opted to have all of these tests done. I did not want to have the amnio done because of the possibility of having a miscarriage. So, DH and I talked to the doctor and we decided to go ahead and have the Ultrascreen, AFP and level II sono done...and pending those results we would decide if we would have the Amnio done.

My results from all 3 tests came back great and our risk was very low for any of those defects...so we opted not to have the amnio and we're very comfortable with our decision.
I hope this helps!
