What happens when you don't have a pediatrician when you leave the hospital??

My DH is driving me nuts about finding a pediatrician. I am due on Tuesday and I feel that I will not have one by then. I know the doctor at the hospital will examine him before he leaves, but after that what happens?

I believe the hospital has "staff" ped's that will examine your baby before they are released ..then they can give you a few recomendations...you will need one for the 2 week checkup

I didn't have a pediatrician when I left the hospital. I ended up going to someone a friend recommended. (Whom I didn't like at all, not pro BFChat Icon ) I ended up changing to my current Dr when he was 2 weeks old. Chat Icon

yes --the phone # is 878-8050

I like that there are only 5 doctors 4 are woman and they have a male adolescent dr for boys. Plus if you have an after hour problem they have a clinic right in Stonybrook hospital that is open from 12 noon -10 pm.

I asked my ob/gyn when I was in labor for a recommendation. They have a pediatrician on staff to do the assessment, etc. If you have your own already, in addition to the hospital they will come too.

Yes, your OBGYN should recommend one. You can also call the Customer Service # for your medical plan and they should be able to give you some references.

Good luck!Chat Icon

We used the House Ped to examine Frankie in the hospital. After I was discharged, we found a pediatrician that we wanted to use and made our 2 week appointment with her. Don't stress, you can find one when you get home.

You should try and have one if possible before for a few reasons. My ped did not go to my hospital so I had to use one in the hospital recommeded by my OB.

Anyway, the baby was jaundice and I needed to speak to my ped before I left the hospital for various reasons, and he had to see her the next day after discharge. It just makes things easier.
