Please post pics of your galley kitchens

I have a galley kitchen with much needed updating and am thinking of how we should move things around, considering its a small kitchen to begin with. Can you share your pics with me so I can get some ideas? And if you have installed cabinets yourself was this easy to do?

TIA!

Re: Please post pics of your galley kitchens

I have a galley kitchen but it is set up in the worst possible way...the sink is right next to the stove and the stove is directly across from the refridgerator - BAD! The stove, sink and fridge should form a triangle in relation to each other but should never be directly across because it blocks the flow of traffic.

We're looking to redo ours as well so I'm looking forward to seeing pics if anyone has any!

Re: Please post pics of your galley kitchens

I hope I have this definition correct. A galley kitchen is situated like a hallway. Meaning it is situated in a long rectangular form, where there is counter space/ appliciances aligned on the two long walls of the kitchen.

Hope this makes sense.

This was mine in the co-op I sold before our houseChat Icon It's just one side, but the other side was the cooker, one cabinet with counter-top and the refrigerator.

Just an FYI when redesigning it try not to move the sink (at least more than 18" or so) or a gas stove. It requires plumbing to be moved and can add a lot to the cost. You can move the sink a little bit and they can extend the exterior (not in the wall) waste pipe a bit through the cabinets.

Re: Please post pics of your galley kitchens

Thanks for the advice Tah-wee-zah. I was actually wondering about that.

The way my kitchen is set up now, is on one wall there is the sink and stove right next to it, but on the other wall, the previous owners had their washer and dryer there, which we took out, so I think I can use that side as well, since the hook ups are there. What do you think?

As long as the hookups are there it should be ok. Looks like you lucked out.

You don't want to know howChat Icon it is to move plumbing. My contractor just extended the waste pipe for the new master bathroom 6 feet today.

Basically, I could have paid off the national debt of GuamChat Icon I knew that already. To reconfigure and extend the master bath will be the most expensive room in the house mostly due to plumbing... whirlpool tub, double sink, moving toilet. Yes, even more expensive than my kitchen due to plumbing.

Let me know if you have any other questions. My FIL is a kitchen contractor. He doesn't do the actual work but he's been designing for over 40 years.

ETA we did install the cabinets ourselves (more DH and his Dad than me) but they both said it was relatively easy but I know they took thier time with each piece to ensure everything lined up properly.

Ditto! Absolutely beautiful. I just had a revelation, and you inspired me. I was thinking of a way to make it bigger but couldn't since I figure there is just so little room, I should just leave it as a galley but reposition. But now I just thought of a way to change it up that may open it up. That is if I have the money to do it. But until then, please keep those pics coming.

Thanks everyone.

Re: Please post pics of your galley kitchens

Thank you so much! It took quite a bit of time and money but we seriously LOVE our kitchen now (when it was a galley it was a point of contention between DH and I and we almost moved out of our house because of it).
I am glad I could be of some help.
It took us a few weeks maybe even two months to figure out how to open this up ina way that we liked. We had a few friends come over at different times and asked them what they would do if it were thier kitchen and searched online in a TON of websites and books. We didn't force the idea to come because we were on a timeline we just let it come. Once we did the sketches we knew we loved it and it was easy from there.

I love LOVE the double oven. I wanted that SO BAD in our kitchen (we just redid it) but DH didn't see the point and honestly we didn't have the room. But I woul dhave LOVED to have that. makes cooking on the holidays so much easier.
