How old is the baby? My doctor said not to start before 3 months, and many people wait unitl 6 months.

If your baby is old enough, there is a chart in Dr. Ferber's book to help you.

Well there are some people that don't believe in crying it out at all. I think its a very individual choice that is hard to make until you have a baby. I thought I would definitely use cry it out (CIO) and have my baby in a crib by 3 months but my parenting style/choices are nothing like I thought they would be. We cosleep with the baby in our room and sometimes in our bed and I do not let her cry to sleep at all.

Ferber/Weissbluth who wrote the two most popular books that support crying as a sleep training technique do not suggest trying until after the baby is at least four months old. Before four months, the child can not be expected to self soothe. (Although allowing them to cry safely in their crib is the right thing to do if you are losing your patience and need to take a breathe, even at a younger age.)

How long depends on the temperment of your child, and what you are trying to accomplish.

Dr. Weissbluth allows for up to an hour of crying at naptimes and unlimited time at night for older babies if there are no other problems and it is time for bed. But this should be done with knowledge of the babies sleeping patterns, and with consistency.
