My 10 yr old just came hoem from school .....

and told me they watched a video on puberty today, and he was telling me about the penis and erections
im not ready for this

I am suprised that t he school didn't send hoome consent forms to the parents about this I remember when I was in school we had to get consent from o ur parents for these classes and if we didn't bring back the consent we had to go to another class until the lesson was over. WEll that was a long time ago LOLOL

I agree although I remember learning a little someting in elementry school but not alot but like I said we had to get consents from the parents I would call up the school and complain

I'd be very annoyed if my son came home armed with all this information and I was totally caught off guard and had no idea that was in the curriculem.

I'm not a parent just yet, but Honestly I dont think this is such a bad thing that he learned about something that's is going to hit him real soon. Some girls/boys go through puberty real early these days, much earlier than we did. My coworkers grandchild got her period at 10 years old!!

It's a natral thing, it happens to everyone, at least he knows what's going to happen or what's going on with his body.

It's a shame cause some parents don't talk to their kids about these things and it can be a very confusing time for them.

NOW IF it was a SEX lesson, then yes, absolutely parents should have a say and give consent to that one.

Most of the time it's the adults who know what's going on are more embarrassed to hear penis, erection, ejaculation then the kids are as long as they understand what the words mean and when to use them.

I am sorry if I offended anyone, i grew up in a very open family and we talked about these things, as well as sex on what's love, healthy, and right. I think it really helped me be comfortable with my body, understand what was going on, and get the right answers from adults not my friends.

My 5th graders are getting that soon in PE

I remember in 4th grade we got our "This is what's going to happen to you" spheel (sp?).

And then in 5th grade it was more on that, and then also what happens to the boys.

We didn't get sex ed until 7th grade... although, i know the 5th graders i student taught got it at the end of the year...

i think they difinitly should have let the parents know that this was goign to be discussed in school. But like another person said, puberty starts much younger these days especially for girls. I would write a note to the teacher and let them know how you feel, im sure your not the only parent. Maybe going foward they will send a letter home.

they have this in my school in 5th grade.. but parents are sent home a consent form.

I do not have a problem with them showing the video but they should of notified the parents. i am sure kids came home with questions and the parents should of known about it so they were prepared to answer these kinds of questions. It really should be up to the childs parents whether or not they see the film. Not all fifth graders are at the same level and some are just not ready for it.

I think it is very important for children to learn the truth about their bodies and what happens during puberty. I am pretty sure statistics show girls go into puberty earlier now than even 20 years ago. I would like to know about WHEN the film would be shown so that the weeks before I could discuss this with my child and let them know that they can ask me anything, anytime. With HIV/AIDS and teen pregnancy I believe that the schools must share basic medical information with all students- they don't need to discuss the "moral" issues of sex but they do need to discuss the health issues and physical issues. So many parents don't want to consent to that but I don't think they should have a choice when it comes to the basic biology lessons behind that.

I am glad your son came home and talked to you about it!! How great that he felt he could!
