Ear infection in son - question.

My son started off with an ear infection and was given amoxicillin, which didn't take effect. He wound up with a double ear infection and has been on Cefzil for 7 days. He is much happier during the day, but he is still waking up at night holding his ear and crying for long bouts. He had gone back to the dr's and was told it looked like it was getting better.... but could it still be bothering him at night? Maybe it got a bit better but not 100 percent and it feels worse at night? He used to hold his ears as a comfort thing, so I just don't know anymore. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Aw! When did you go back (since you started giving the Cefzil)? Do you have another follow up scheduled? My daughter had an ear infection and the Amoxicillin didnt do the trick for her either so she is currently on Omnicef. Definitely the night is worse for them if they have an ear infection. I wouldnt hesitate to give him some Tylenol at bedtime. Poor thing, I hope he's 100% soon.

My daughter had an ear infection and the Amoxicillin didnt do the trick for her either and she ended up with a double ear infection. They then put her on Omnicef. She finished that last week but was still pulling her left ear and srugging her left schoulder up to her ear. I was positive that it was stillinfected. I took her to the Dr. yesterday and she said no more infection. Huh? She said there was a little fluid though. So I am giving her PediaCare and Tylenol. It seemed to work last night. I hope your son feels better.

When Joseph woke up in the middle of the night screaming that his ear hurt - I called the pediatrician on call - she told me sometimes it gets worse at night since they lay in the same position for a long time. Her suggestion was to put warm compresses on his ear and give him motrin. Rather than suggest the motrin (since I'm not your pediatrician), I'm going to suggest the warm compresses to alleviate the pain. I was lucky that Joseph could tell me what was wrong - it's so much harder with an infant.

Thanks ladies.... I will try the hot compresses and maybe try the motrin again... I had tried to hold off for the last couple of nights since I didn't want to rely on it, but if he is still feeling pain possibly, then I will give it to him. Thanks for your help and well wishes! Chat Icon
