So sad and I don't know what to do!!

My mom just called me and told me that my childhood dog was rushed to the animal ER and is having congenital heart failure. Her health is improving and she is coming home tonight to be on 24 hour watch by my mother. There is still a chance that the dog could go back into heart failure and die. I am going to my moms house tonight when my Sadie gets home but I don't know what to do about tomorrow!! I am a first year teacher and my sick days are limited. But if I don't take off tomorrow and my dog dies I am going to be devastated that I wasn't there for her! Its hard enough that I have to go school tonight because its my first classes for the semester. This dog has been my best friend since I was 13. She was my first dog!! I am I nuts for wanting to take off to be with a dog???? I want to just burst out into tears!!

A similar thing happened with my cat. I stayed at my mom's one night, and he slept on my stomach the whole night. I went to work, and he wound up dying in the middle of the night the following night. My mom was asleep, but he died in his sleep. You can't predict exactly when he will die--say your good byes tonight or tomorrow morning (I think).

ETA: I was glad to have seen my cat before he died, but that's not what I remember most about him--and I wouldn't want that to be how I picture him. I remember the good times when he was at his best, and that's what you should do with your dog. He'll be with you whenever he actually takes his last breath whether you are in the classroom or at home.

I have taken a half a sick day to bring my cat to the vet. You do what you feel is best.

Oh hon you are making me cry. I don't think there is anything wrong with wanting to take off to be with your dog. I would do the same thing.

I remember when my dog died. I was a senior in H.S. it was the worst day. My dog knew more about me then anyone else. I told her everything. You are in a hard postion though because you dont want to be denied tenure. I aam susre you have personal days though and sickness in fanily days that you loose if you dont use them.

I dont think you are being a baby and I would probably take off, but im not a certified teacher so I dont know how the "time off' goes!

I am sorry, I know how sad you must be, we just had to put our dog, who was 16 to sleep 3 weeks ago.

I am so sorry to hear that you are dealing with this. Have you taken days yet this year? If they love you, one day off is not going to make or break your tenure. I think that pets are family members and you do not want to regret anything . . .
