Maternity leave dilema.
Ok, so I am done with my school year on June 14, and my EDD is June 21, a week later. I thought I was entitled to 6 weeks paid maternity leave, but I was just told it's actually 4 weeks, which is fine considering we had no maternity policy up until a couple of months ago. However, I just received a very big promotion for next school year, along with a large raise, and I am afraid that now that my contract is signed, it will make me look bad if I want to take my four weeks at the end of the year. I was expecting to be able to work right up until the end of the school year, but the more I'm here, the more I realize how uncomfortable it is to sit at a piano all day in a room with no windows or ventillation. If I were to take my four weeks, it would start on May 24, which is after all of my perfomance obligations for the school year are over. The only thing I usually do the end of the year is clean out my classroom and show the kids movies and teach them one last song for graduation and moving up day, which I can do before I leave.
I just don't want to look bad...like, "Hi, thanks for my big promotion. Rather than being here until the end so I can set things up for next year, I'm going to take maternity leave. Bye." I just don't want them to look at me as being flakey. I don't know what to do.

Honestly I can't imagine them not understanding but I don't work with the people you work with. Everything I read makes you sound like an extremely responsible teacher so if you left I'm sure you would leave nothing undone. They couldn't ask for more than that. If you're entitled to it I say take it.

Everything I read makes you sound like an extremely responsible teacher so if you left I'm sure you would leave nothing undone. They couldn't ask for more than that. If you're entitled to it I say take it.
I was thinking of maybe only taking the two and a half weeks in June off, too. I just take my professional reputation very seriously, and i'm afraid if I take off 4 weeks, people will look at me as not caring about my program, when infact, it's a huge priority for me. Or, I was thinking of maybe taking all four weeks, but during that time setting up my new program from home. I need to go and open an account with a music store for equipment and write up a new curriculum, which I could do from home. I don't know. I'm so torn as to what I should do.

I agree. You have to do the best thing for you and baby. I am sure that they will understand.

I do not think that they will look at you badly. Although, I do not work in a shool so I am not positive. I think they will not think anything of it. There is a reason they promoted you and that was most likely for your hard work and dedication. Just because you are unable to work until the end does not mean you did not work hard up until now, nor does it mean that you are not dedicated.
But, you have to do what will be best for you in the end.
